MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., presided over the sitting of the Magistrate s Court at Palmerston North on Monday. For riding unlighted cycles at night, J, IV. Marshall and B. Pearcy were er h fined 10s, with 3s costs. •
"merged with riding cycles in the railway subway, S. J. Brookie, J. A. May bal'd, R. C. Cooney and E. Rush were each fined £1 5 with 10s cokts. Tor a similar offence, M. E. Penketli was fined £l, with 3s costs. Stated to be £l4 7s in arrears op a maintenance order in favour of Ills wife, Albert Arthur Young was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended as long as defendant’s wife received his unemployment allocation. Stated to be £3 6s in arrears on an order for the maintenance of his wife, and £2 Is for his three children, William Nelson Thompson was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment, the order to he suspended as long as he complies with the correct orders and pays 10s weekly off the arrears in each case. Mrs Alice Hughes, of Maharahara, pleaded guilty to a charge that in incurring a debt to the extent of £7 6s 8d with the C. M. Ross Coy., Ltd., she did obtain credit by fraud. Detective Power stated that on January 23 last defendant purchased a mattress, pillows and curtains from the firm mentioned and asked for credit. She gave the nanie of Mrs Lewis, and then those of a Napier firm and a bank as references. Inquiries showed that she was unknown to either firm or bank. When interviewed, accused, who has eight children, persisted in a story thai the goods, had. been bought by her sister, but that she had taken them over and Would pay for them. She later admitted that this was incorrect, and that she had given false references. Her husband was a hard-working man who had entrusted all financial arrangements to her but she had incurred many debts, most of them without his knowledge. “You cannot be allowed to go on like this,” stated the Magistrate to accused. He warned her of the consequences of a repetition of the offence. Stating that she wanted some supervision, lie admitted her to probation for a term of two years.
