GENERAL ADVANCE

WELLINGTON WOOL SALE. BRADFORD BIDS STRONGLY. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, March 14. Expectations of growers and brokers were not disappointed at the fourth Wellington wool sale of the season toc'.ny. Taking into account the quality of the offerings, the sale was the best held in Wellington this season, the market generally ruling firm on the Dunedin sale of last Wednesday. The quantity offered was a large one for a March sale, being 28,484 bales, as ugamst 21,080 bales at the corresponding sale of last year, and compared with an average offering of bales at the December, January and February sales this season. The total offerings at Wellington for the first three sales this season were 92,134 bales, of which 85,804 hales, or more than 93 per cent, were sold at auction. Passings to-day were relatively few, and the clearance at auction was fully 95 per cent. Fine wools, which formed a small proportion of the offering, were generally firm, some “speciality” lines making advanced rates. Crossbreds, which met a very keen demand, were firm all round, and, compared with the February rates at Wellington, ordinary topmaking sorts showed a rise from id to id per lb. There was a full bench of buyers representing all sections of the trade. From the outset it was apparent that crossbreds were in strong demand, all classes meeting keen bidding, frequently the eagerness of buyers to secure lots caused them to run ahead of the auctioneers and the recording clerks, whose energies were fully extended. The bidding was strong and well sustained, and frequently excited, when the effects of eight or ten buyers were concentrated simultaneously, and at common levels for much desired lots. In many cases buyers appeared to have fairly elastic limits. Bradford buyers, who, at earlier sales, appeared to be holding off, were well in the market, and bought extensively, the sale at times being dominated by them. Continental interests. however, were well in the running and forced the pace at times. There was also considerable buying on behalf of Japan. Local mills were not to be denied when lots suitable to their requirements came under the hammer.

The sale proceeded with great vigour anil at a rapid rate from start to finish. Well over 9000 hales were dealt with during the first two hours, and when the dinner adjournment was made at 6 o’clock some 20.000 bales had been dealt with in slightly less than four hours.

Among- notable realisations were 15>d for halfbred ewes, and lfkl for several lots of halfbreds, 153 d for Merino hoggets, 123 d for super crossbreds, 12d for super ewes, and up to 10Ad for other lines of medium to fine crossbreds; lid to lljd lor crossbred hoggets, and 12fd to 13d far lambs. Lots from the well-known Branscombe clip sold as follow: AA eves, 13 bales, 10Jd; A wethers, 10 hales, 9Jd; AD wethers, 6 bales, 9]d; AA lambs, 7 bales, 12Jd; A lambs, 4 bales, lid. . ~ The Glenlee Merinos sold as iollow: 9 bales AH 153 d; 16 bales AAV, 15(1; 15 bales AF. 15d ; lo bales BW, 14- 4 d ; 4 bales BE, 143 d; 8 bales C, llid (passed); 5 baleSs W, 13|d; 8 bales, first pieces, 12\d; 5 bales bellies, llid; 5 bales second pieces, 9d; 5 bales locks, 6d; 4 bales erutchings, Bd. THE RANGE - OF PRICES. COMPARISON WITH FEBRUARY. The official range of prices at. yesterday’s sale as computed by the Wellington Wool Brokers’ Association, is given below, tho prices at. the February sale being shown for comparative purposes:

BROKERS’ REPORTS. DALGETY AND COY., LTD. Dalgoty and Coy., Ltd., report:—As the selling season draws to a close it is pleasing to bo ablo to report a decidedly hardening tendency with buying more widely spread and English competition much more decided. Yesterday’s sale was from the outset fervid and at times excited, with, as far as Wellington is concerned, Bradford dominating the market on the ordinary stylo of top-making crossbred wools. During past sales this season, Franco and the Continental Powers have been “top dog,” but yesterday English buyers came into their own, and on numerous occasions showed that they had limits just as clastic as any other overseas buying agency. Bidding at yesterday’s sale was reminiscent of the year 1913, when many buyors were on their foot shouting out prices with always one buyer with a Id up his sleeve. • Late southern sales reported a strong market for almost all classes of wool, and it is pleasing to bo able to report that at our sale there has been no slacking in prices. In Wellington this year a record disposal will probably be writton—up to date 119,134 bales have been disposed of at auction, and with the April sale still to be noted of. say, 20,000 bales, will give a total. of 139,134 bales, as against sales for 1934-35 season of 90,434 bales. It seems quite evident from sales effected in Wellington and other centres that the carry-over this year in the Dominion will be of small compass —probably not more than 15,000 bales of greasy wool. This year many clips which were previously shipped to Loudon have been sold locally, which, to some extent, accounts for the higher total sold locally. It. is now quite evident that tho London market will be bare of New Zealand wools during the winter and spring months, and if the English manufacturing trade maintains its present satisfactory mill output, top-makers there may later on find some difficulty in securing their normal supplies of tho raw textile. The wool position to-day seems sound. At yesterday's auction Bradford and Japan wore tho kenest competitors, with France, Belgium and Germany also well m the market. In the early sales Bradford were inclined to lag, probably thinking that Continental competition would not bo maintained throughout tho season. With only ono more, round of sales 10 go, and with tho Continent still in tho market, Bradford seem to be now forced to cover their requirements, the position being more pronounced and untenable owing to the decided shortago of supplies which will come on the London market. It is many years since London was so bare of supplies ct' tho raw textile, and .further, purchases made date have been going into unmed/ato requirements of the manufactured article. Heavy clearances were made yesterday from alt catalogues, probably 95 per cent., growers meeting the market spontaneously at the present satisfactory trend of prices. As compared with our February sale we quote: —Ordinary top-making wools of from 40 to 46 quality, jd to jd higher; hogget wools, all qualities, jd to fd higher; good spinners’ stylo, 48/50, 2 d higher, at times for extra special lines Id up; free lambs’ wool, par to jd higher; bellies and pieces, par to id higher; halfbreds (only small offering), par to R 1 up; erutchings, good, jd to Id higher; seedy lambs, in buyers' favour, I

Levin and Coy., Ltd., report:—A total of 28,448 bales was offered, dur catalogue representing 8227 bales. There was a large entry of crossbreds. There were some good representative clips, but the bulk was topmaking wool, and not quite equal in style and condition to previous sales. There was also a fair entry of back-country Merinos from Marlborough, and quite a quantity of average hallbrede from Marlborough and Nelson. Bidding was very keen and vigorous. Prices showed a general advance. Merinos advanced on February salo id, halfbreds Id to lid, and crossbreds id to id. Lambs’ wool remained barely at par. Hogget wool improved id to id. Crutchings sold equal to fleece prices or better, as high as 9d being paid for several good lots. The best sales of the day came from 40-44’s, the bulk of this wool bringing Bid to 9d. A feature of the realisations through- ' out the season has been that the lift in I prices hoe been from the bottom. It js not | only the super and top lines of the' clips that have boon selling at enhanced prices, j but all grades of coarser types, cottcd and [ dingy wool, and locks, bellies and pieces I have sold at a comparatively higher advance. This is where the weight of wool in any clip lies, and the general uplift has made tiro return per bnle or per head a very satisfactory One cannot help remarking, however, how small is the | range of prices in each grade from 40’s to. 50’s. Twopence per lb would cover the whole variation. . For . Merinos, the demand came from I

France and Belgium, for halfbreds from Bradford, Japan, Canada, tho Continent, and for crossbreds from Bradford, Canada, Japan, U.S.A., and tho Continent. We sold 93 per cent, of our eataloguo under tho hammer, and there will ho' a clearance before tho morning. The following are some of the results: —

The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Coy., Itcb, report as follows: —Our catalogue contained 4335 bales. There was a full bench of buyers representing most wool-consuming countries, and competition from tho outset until the close of the sale was very keen and at times excited. Bradford representatives were much more in evidence at yesterday’s sale than at any previous auction this season, with the result that they forced the pace and secured the major portion of (leeco wool, but Continental buyers were also keenly in the market, ns well as Japan and America. For bellies and pieces and crutchings competition was very good and the bulk of these were secured by Continental representatives. Lambs’ wool, of which there was a fair entry, was eagerly competed for by Bradford, the Continent, America, and Australia at most satisfactory prices. Comparing prices with those ruling at recent auctions there is little or no change, blit comparing them with the previous auction in February at this centre they can be quoted at about /d dearer. The wool opened up in fair condition, very few super lots being included in the entry, the bulk of which can be described as ordinary top-making sorts. The following are some of tlio . prices realised :

ABRAHAM AND WILLIAMS AND WRIGHT, STEPHENSON. .Messrs Abraham mui Williams, Ltd., in .conjunction with Messrs Wright, Stephenson and (Jo., Ltd., report: The selling ecason is drawing to a cioso and. as usual the catalogues now offering comprise rather a mixed selection. This condition often is responsible tor irregularity in realisations and this was noticeable at yesterday’s sale, particularly in regard 10 jhuUbrcds and lambs’ wool. Keen general competition, however, was experienced. Bradford was a vigorous' buyer, the Continent purchased freely and Japan was operating lor suitable wool. We offered 4315 bales and sold . 93 per cent, under tho hammer. Many of tiie wools were well-grown and of good quality, but some clips were spoilt by the presence of skirtings and cots and others suffered from the presence of seed. Indica--lions point to good selling conditions ahead, but no one can forecast the future of the market with certainty. Although crossbred wool is still low in price, it is well to keep in mind that a limit exists to the public’s ability to pay advanced prices and the price will certainly suffer if that limit is exceeded. At the moment trade is moving freely and practically all growers continue to meet the market by accepting current values. Compared with the last Wellington sale, ordinary crossbreds wore up /d, halfbreds showed a slight firming, lambs on the average showed little difi ference, but were inclined to bo erratic. I Speaking generally, most improvement was shown in the prices realised for medium and lower-grade wools.
