EDUCATION BOARD
MONTHLY MEETING. STAFF CHANGES. The monthly meeting of tlie Wanga.nui Education Board was held on Wednesday. Those present were Messrs E. F. Hemingway (chairman), M. H. Oram, J. K. Hornjilow P. Munro, A. S. Coleman, W. Benefield. W. Dukeson and Colonel J. IT.'Whyte. Mr J. S. Tingey and Rev. G. S. King were granted leave of absence.
Tlie need for extra playing ground at the '.Central School, Palmerston North, was discussed and it was decided to ask .permission to acquire the additional land under the Public Works Act.
The architect (Mr E. R. Hodge) recommended that at the West End School new out-offices should be erected, instead of repairing tlie old ones, which were stated to be much too close to the main building. The present outoffices were damaged by the recent storm. —The board ' decided that the recommendations should be followed.
Following a request by the Oroua Downs School Committee for concreting to be clone, Mr Hodge recommended that it should be carried out, the board adopting the recommendation. The Tokorangi School Committee asked for a grant to assist in the purchase of a piano as a former instrument which had been bought through the hoard was unsuitable. It was decided to reply that the board had no funds to allot for such a purpose.
Resignations received included those of Mr J. N. Little, sole teacher, Pn.kiliikitra, and Miss Rona M. Smith, assistant, Taikorea. Teachers appointed to other positions in the board’s service included Mr H. W. Wood, headmaster, Clieltenhaip. Miss A. F. Barrett, sole teacher, River Road, Miss M. A. Arlidge, sole teacher, Awahou South, Miss L. M. Spence, sole teacher. Bluff Bond. The chairman reported that tho following appointments had been made: Mr M. C. Leet. sole teacher, Stanway, Miss T. M. Simpson, assistant, College Street, Mr W. F. Morton, woodwork instructor, Miss E. M. Bland, assistant, Hokowhitu. Temporary appointments of uncertificated teachers included that of bliss G. E. Bowley, sole teacher, Table Flat. A letter was received from Hon. P. Fraser, Minister of Education, who stated lie heard with lunch pleasure of the magnificent efforts of the board’s architect, Mr E. 11. Hodge, and the staff during the recent storm. He wished his appreciation of tlie splendid spirit they displayed in the preservation of public property recorded in the minutes. “Mr Hodge was rung up about 6 p.m. on the Sunday and made aware of the damage and within two hours had despatched to Palmerston North a. staff and material to cope with the damage,” said the chairman. “As a result of his efforts, every school,_ with the exception of the West End School was able to open on the Monday as if nothing untoward had occurred. I would recommend that the board place on record its appreciation of Mr Hodge s efforts, which are in keeping with the best traditions of the board and on a par with the excellent work carried out by Mr Hodge subsequent to the Napier earthquake. I would also like to express my appreciation to Colonel Whyte for notifying the board so quickly in regard to the damage to the College Street School. In consequence of his prompt action the damage was repaired and the school v T as opened next-morning.” h , Colonel Whyte told of the excellent work accomplished by the board’s architect and the workmen, who worked practically all night and again all next day to make the schools safe, 'I must record my appreciation of the work accomplished,” said Colonel Whyte. New awards.—Carnarvon, Kelvin Grove Manchester Street, Parewanui. ' Letters of commendation to teacher, and committee.—Bainesse, Linton, Oroua Downs, Waiata. Mr Hemingway was appointed to represent the board on the Wellington Training College committee of advice. A letter was received from' the department stating that free text books will bo supplied to secondary pupils whose parents were not in a position to purchase them. Fifty-nine admissions to the iraining College from the board’s area were approved.
