TAR-SEALING URGED
FOXTON BEACH ROAD. SUPPORT BY CHAMBER. Renewed representations for the tar-sealing of the road f r °m the loxton Borough boundary to tine Manawatn Heads were urged by the boxten Beach Improvement Society in.a letter which came before the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce yesterday afternoon. “This matter has been under consideration for some time, but nothing has been done,” stated the society. It is the worst three miles of road in New Zealand, and is positively a danger to motorists. The majority of the section holders at the beach are residents of Palmerston North. and the sen front is used widely by the nub lie. When the road is completed tee Manawatu Heads will become practically a suburban seaside resort to tour city, and motorists will be able tq do the trip in 35 to 4o minutes with comfort.” . “It is a ghastly piece of road, commented Mr W. H. Cadwallader who suggested that it would be a suitable work upon which to employ relief labour at standard rates. ~ “It is a question of who is to pay. commented the president (Mr A. J. Graham), who said a subsidy of £> for £1 had been sought but only LA for £1 had been offered. It was decided to support the request. and give it active encouragement by urging upon the Main Highways Board, the Public Hoiks Department and the Manawatu County Council the need for the work to be undertaken. CO-OPERATION ONLY.
COUNCIL’S VIEW. That it could not undertake the financial burden of tar-sealing the Foxton Beach Road was again made plain at the meeting of the Manawatu County Council yesterday, when a letter was received from the I oxton Beach Improvement Society requesting the council to again consider the tarsealing of the Beach Road from the Foxton borough boundary to. the Manawatu Heads. It was stated that at the annual meeting of the society a decision to make further agitation in this matter had been arrived at with a view to having the work done immediately. . Complaints of the condition of the road had been numerous during the season, and the number of motorists using the road warranted something being done. The society further asked for the co-operation of the council in any action it might take. “We will co-operate with them in any movement they bring forward, but it is no use them expecting to get money from us,” said the chairman (Cr W. E. Barber). “We will give them all the assistance we can at any time.”
Cr J. Boyce: We always have given them every assistance we could. Cr It- A. Wilson: The road to the beach is . very rough, though. The chairman replied that it was likely to be so as long as it was used by thousands of motorists who paid nothing towards the upkeep of the road. The council had no money to maintain adequately, let alone tar-seal, a road like that leading to the beach. It was decided to reply stating that the council would co-operate with the society in any way so long as the society found the means to provide the money.
