DAIRY REGULATIONS
CASE AT WANGANUI. | Per Press Association. s WANGANUI, Feb. 10. | Proceedings were instituted under the dairy regulations before Mr J. H. j Salmon, S.M., wherein John Pritchard * Veale, manager, Oroua Downs Dairy a Factory, was charged with sending or j allowing to be sent to Cnstlecliff grad- * ing stores a crate of cheese with a g mark Or statement which was false, i or w r as reasonably capable of bearing J a false interpretation. There were | 1 three similar charges, also three g against'the company, but the latter R were withdrawn at the request of Mr N. R. Bain, who stated that the di- ( rectors had no knowledge of the or- j fences. j Mr Bain stated that there were 55 1 j second-grade cheeses manufactured and | sent to the stores, but 46 were sorted H out with the assistance of the defendant. Nine were not accounted for and had gone Home. A second-grade cheese had been put in each orate with a first. The department alleged this was done deliberately, and viewed the matter seriously, for if the matter had not been discovered at this end the effect on people buying cheese at j Home could be readily seen. . i Mr Btodie, for tlie defence, said there had been no personal gain to Veale and what he did was solely out of zeal. Mr Salmon said that whatever motives defendant may have had, the fact remains that publication of the fact that he had broken the regulations might do incalculable harm to the dairy industry. He must impose a penalty that would deter others I from breaking regulations. fl A fine of £5 on each charge was ini- B posed with costs 225, and solicitor s k fee £3 3s. 1
