RAILWAY EARNINGS

THE HOLIDAY PERIOD. • REVENUE RISES SHARPLY. A working profit of £108,572 is shown in the railways return for the four weeks ended January 4, published in the Gazette. This result, which includes the yield of the Christmas and New Year holiday period, reveals an increase of £6975 as compared with the corresponding period last year. The improvement must be considered most satisfactory, in view of the rise in salaries and wages by 7\ per cent, on August 1. Tlie gross receipts amounted to £598,218, or £33,150 more than last year. Expenses at £429,646 were £26,175 higher. The operating account for the North Island shows a revenue of £322,431, an increase of £21,827. The expenses were £230,899, or £11,466 higher. Net revenue at £91,532 was £10,421 more than a year ago. In the South Island receipts were £206,704 and expenses £164,513, these amounts being £8746 and £12,657 respectively higher than the corresponding figure last year. Net revenue decreased by £3911 to £42,191. The balance of miscellaneous revenue was £34,849, an increase of £465. Gross revenue under this head _ was £69,083, and gross expenditure £34,234.

'Revenue for the 40 weeks from April 1 to January 4 amounted to £5,027,642, an increase of £251,718, while expenses totalling £4,427,687 were £222,754 higher. Net revenue at £599,955 increased by £29,199.
