FAMOUS POET

FUNERAL OF MR KIPLING. BURIAL IN THE ABEY. ABSENCE OF POMP. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) Received January 24, 1.5 p.m. . LONDON, Jan. 23. The funeral service for Mr Rudyard Kipling at Westminster Abbey was conducted with a minimum of pomp. The ceremony was attended by statesmen, writers, high officers of the fighting services, representatives of the Dominions, including the Agents-General, foreign diplomats and poets. The ashes lay beneath a Union Jack on which rested two simple wreaths. Mrs Kipling was a tragic figure. The congregation sang Mr Kipling’s own “Recessional.” The poet was buried next to Thomas Hardy and near Charles Dickens.
