BY NEW ZEALANDERS. I Received January 24, 9.45 a.m. MELBOURNE. Jan. 24. • Mathieson, the New Zealand swimmer, broke the Australian 400 metres back-stroke record by 30 seconds in 6.41 3-5, defeating Noel Ryan, the British Empire champion, and Herford, the Australian half-mile champion. Jarvis (New Zealand) won tlie Victorian 100 yards free style championship in 54 seconds from the Queensland champion, Trimble, and the Victorian champion, Crawford.
