FEILDING

ACCESSION CEREMONY. OFFICIAL PROCLAMATION. In a simple but dignified ceremony the official proclamation marking the accession of His Majesty King Edward VIII to the Throne was held in Feilding yesterday at 11 o’clock. Promptly at 10 a.m. the local business houses and shops closed their doors and before the appointed time an hour later a large crowd had started to assemble at the Borough Counoil offices in Kimbolton Road. By 11 o’clock the dimensions of the crowd had grown to a very large one, representative of both the town and the adjacent country districts, the Oroua County Council being represented by Mr 0. McElroy, the senior councillor. At the first stroke of eleven the Mayor (Mr T. Collins) took his stand on the steps of the council buildings and read the official proclamation, the Union Jack meanwhile being hoisted to the masthead by the Town Clerk (Mr C. H. Tate). Clearly and strongly the impressive words of the proclamation carried to the furthest portions of the gathering, the Mayor giving a dignified reading of the official document.

Following the reading of the proclamation, the gathering, led by members of the combined church choirs, sang a. verse of the National Anthem, the ceremony then concluding. The Mayor intimated that he had not yet received any official information regarding the procedure on the day of the funeral of the late King George, but public notice w’ould be given of the arrangements in ample time. CEREMONY AT KIMBOLTON. Owing -to the unavoidable absence of Mr L. T. McLean, chairman of the Kiwitea County Council, the official proclamation of accession of His Majesty King Edward VIII was read at Kimbolton, yesterday, by Mr W. L. Hesseltine, county clerk. A representative gathering of settlers and residents of the township assembled at the council offices to hear the tion.EIRE AT HALCOMBE. On Wednesday evening the residence of Mr J. P. Morrison, Tokorangi Road, Halcombe, was completely destroyed by fire. The origin of the outbreak is unknown and it is stated that Mr Morrison is a heavy loser by the occurrence.
