WEST END
PROGRESSIVE ASSOCIATION. A meeting of tlie West End Progressive Association was held in the school last evening, Mr A. W. Just presiding. Others present were Mesdames A. W. Just, G. Tremaine, P. A. Warner, G. A. Schlierike, A. Penketli, and Messrs J. R. Robertson, J. IL Speedy, H. Bovis, L. W. MeEwan, J. 11. Dalzicl, A. R. Allen and W. Sclnvabe (secretary). Since the last meeting the whole nation had suffered a severe loss in the death of His Majesty the King, said the chairman. Even apart from being the King, His Majesty had been a gentleman of most estimable qualities. Everybody regretted his passing. The chairman asked that those present stand in silence for a period as an expression of regret, and that was done. It was mentioned that there were a number of hedges in the district which required cutting back. They did not add to the smart appearance of the district when they hung over the footpaths, it was said. It was decided to approach a number of residents, members feeling sure that a suggestion from the association would not be taken as an offence. The association decided to make representations to the City Council officials for attention to be paid to a man-hole in West Street, which, it was stated, had its rim projecting well above the crown of the road.
