RACING FIXTURES

AT TRENTHAM AND ASHHUBST QUEEN OF SONG AND EMINENT WIN The delayed Anniversary Day fixtures at Trentham and Aslihurst were proceeded with yesterday. The weather was not particularly good and the postponement of the meetings from the previous day resulted in the attendances of patrons being reduced. The honours in the Wellington Gup went to Queen of Song from a fellow southerner, Silver Ring, with Kinnoull third, while.at Aslihurst Eminent won the Cup for the second year in succession, Aussie Ba and Gay Boy attending him at the post.

AT ASHHURST. CUP RACE TO EMINENT. HACK CUP TO BEAU GALLANTE. While the attendance of enthusiasts was possibly not so great as would have been the, case had the meeting been held on the holiday, there was quite a good crowd of patrons at Aslihurst yesterday when the annual meeting of the dub was hold. However, the club had to submit to a decrease in the totalizator returns, the sum of £BBBS being handled for the day as compared with £9917 10s last year. The principal honours went to Eminent for the second year in succession, the Leighton gelding winning nicely from Aussie Ba and Gay Boy, while in the Manawatu Gorge Hack Cup Beau Gallante won from Solaria and Whetmna. At the conclusion of these two contests the handsome trophies which | were attached to the events were preI sealed to the respective winning owners : by the president, i\lr 11. MacDonald. A stop-watdi. went to the trainer of the winner in each instance, while the successful horsemen each received a whip. ' Tiio following are the descriptions of events additional to those appearing in the first edition of the “Standard” yesterday:— A CLOSE CALL. HAPPY HUNTING WINS. Ngatirahiri, who claims an engagement in the Trial Handicap at Trentham to-day and Distinguished, were withdrawn from the . Komako Hack Handicap for which the New Ply-mouth-trained Grateful was installed favourite from Lacquer and Happy Hunting, llappy Hunting, after running wide at the straight entrance, came through to win narrowly from the favourite, who finished very last. • Eka Tore, Vonia Park, and Lacquer were the smartest to find their feet and they took up the running from Zionist, both Happy Hunting, and Grateful being well hack in the early stages. Grossing the top Vonia Park was holding a slight advantage over Eka Tore, with Lacquer and Zionist next, but Grateful and Happy Hunting were moving up, tbe hitler on the outside. 'The Awapuni mare turned into the straight very wide, but she finished generously to get up to win by a short! head from Grateful, whose finishing effort came just a shade too late. Zionist, who was mailing her first appearance in her new colours, ran an excellent race to finish third a neck away. Vonia Park was fourth with Lacquer next to finish.

CONSISTENCY REWARDED. BAZAINE WINS AGAIN. De Trop was backed down to a very short price for tbe Siberia Handicap Irom Distinguished and Happy Hunting, but of tiie trio only Distinguished figured ill the finish and lie had to submit to defeat by the consistent Bazaine, who finished too strongly for the Marton winner. Do Trop, Golden Time, and Merlyn fought for the leading position and it was the favourite who was the first to give way, and he steadily drifted back to the centre of the field. Distinguished joined the leading division coming across the top, with Silver Song, Bazaine and Recitation moving up, the topweight not having commenced with his customary dash. Distinguished was the first to straighten up, but Bazaine came strongly to win nicely by a short length from Distinguished, with Silver Song finishing on in third place half a length hack. Mowgli and Golden Chest were together ahead of Recitation. AN INDIFFERENT DISPATCH. FAVOURITE’S BIG TASK. The concluding event, the Rauinai Handicap, for which nine of the 11 acceptors went to the post, Land Tax and Aussie Ra being detections, was marred by an indifferent dispatch, Speed being badly left, the tapes having lifted as he was backing round behind the line. Sanguine King, Royal Routine and Lifeguard jumped to the front, the trio being in lino as they turned into the hack ahead of Movie Star arid Gold Cure., with the favourite bringing up the rear. Coming across the top Speed ran round his held to lie with Lifeguard, who had taken charge, as they approached the straight entrance. However, the effort did not enable the favourite to hold off Pla.die over the fial pinch, the latecomer getting up to heat Speed by three-quarters of a length, with Wasteland two lengths back. Movie Star was right up fourth with Gold Cure next. DETAILED RUNNERS.

EMINENT TAKES THE CUP. EUR SECOND SUCCESSIVE YEAR. A field of six horses paraded for the Asliliurst Cup, Sanguine King and Ephialtes declining their engagements. Aussie Ra was a firm favourite from Eminent and the pair fought out the finish, the latter coming in the straight to win from the favourite and register his second successive win in the Cup contest. Ihe sextette were got away in good line, Aga Khan and Gay Roy being in the van as they came through tlie straight, Aussie Ra and Queen’s Pride being on terms ahead of Wyndale and Eminent. They maintained the same order into and along the back, but at the half-mile Gay Boy commenced to work clear of Aga Khan, while Wyndale and Eminent were closing up- W ith heads straightened out for home Aussie Ra took charge at the distance., but he could not withstand the final challenge of Eminent, who got up to win by half a length, with a gap of two lengths to Gay Boy. Queen s Pride and Wyndale were next. The winner was ridden a very confident race by L H. Jones, the • Awapum horseman, while J. Leach appeared to have far from an easy ride on Aussie Ra. who had to be kept up to his work the whole way. A BIG FIELD. FAVOURITE STOPS BADLY. The big field of 17 runners went to the post in the Novice Stakes, borum. Pink Garter, Tommy Atkins and Warelii being defections. First Chapter was a slightly better favourite than Martial Lady and War Lap, but the trio all finished outside the dividends, although the favourite managed to hold on to fill third place after displaying brilliant pace early. first Chapter dashed to the front to take up the running from War Lap, Maestro, Martial Lady, and Golden Chest. The last-named ran up to the leader turning into the straight and at the distance the challenger had the favourite beaten. However, Joy Box came up in pursuit and the Taranaki representative wore down Golden Chest to win by three-quarters of a length, with First Chapter a length and a quarter back. Then came Count Wilfonyx and Bacchus Marsh together ahead of War Lap. AN OVERDUE WIN. BEAU GALL ANTE SCORES. Solaria, who had competed at Thames on Saturday, was an equal favourite with Taumau for the Manawatu Gorge Hack Cup, but there was also good support for 1 loyal Record and the bracketed pair, Bean Gallante and Pawky. Backers of the bracket were fortunate in that Beau Gallante produced something approaching his old lorin to beat Solaria, the pair being well clear of the third horse. Whetuma, who was unfortunate in that lie was the last to move out of the barrier. After some delay, the field of 14 runners was sent away in quite good line, although Whetuma was immediately chopped out. Trimden was taken to the front to lead Confiscation, Tidal Song, Beau Gallante, and Solaria. Going into the back stretch Beau Gallante worked forward to join Trimden and the chestnut then took charge half a mile from home, Solaria, Royal Record, and Confiscation being ahead of Otaki and Whetuma. Beau Gallante ran wide at the straight entrance and Solaria was almost on tGrins at tlic distancG, but the leader was kept going and he held on to win by half a length with Whetuma three lengths back. Version was fourth, with Donegal, Royal Record, and Monarchy in a bunch.

TRENTHAM MEETING. . QUEEN OF SONG’S CUP. STAKES TO MALA. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Jan. 25. The Wellington Racing Club’s summer moating opened at Trentham to-day in overcast but fine weather. The track was fast and the attendance large. The totalisalor handled £40,953 as against £44,361 10s last year, which was a holiday, the decrease being £3403 10s. The South Island made a clean sweep_ of the prizes in the principal race, the Wellington Cup, all the placed horses coining from the south. The whole of the 20 runners carded went to the post, and, in a very clean and true-run race, victory rested with the lightweight Queen of Song, who defeated the favourite Silver Ring, who was attempting to concede her 311 b. That he found the task beyond him was no disgrace, and he ran like the high-class horse that lie is. The two-year-olds, who were beaten in the last two contests for tho Wellington Stakes, had their turn again when Mala won in time which equalled the record for the race. Mala’s performance was good and solid, as lie came from behind the leaders, and also carried 41b over his weight-for-age. He is -a well-grown colt by Lackham from Lucretia. and was bred by Mr C. 1. Koeble, of Palmerston North, but is raced hy his trainer, H. E. Russell, of Woodvtffe. It is a coincidence that this combination should have secured the best Lackham colt that has been seen since they registered such signal successes with Golden Wings.
