METHODIST MISSIONS
WORK OF THE SOCIETY. AUCKLAND, Jan. 23. The president of the conference (Rev. J. H. Haskim) took the chair at the annual board meeting of the Missionary Society of the Methodist Church yesterday and to-dny. Fitting reference was made to the death of His Majesty King George V, and a resolution of sympathy was passed, the members standing in silence. The balance-sheet was presented, and showed an increase of income oyer expenditure, the native church having contributed no less than £1685 during the year. Rev. A. H. Scriven referred to his recent visit to the Solomon Islands and spoke in the highest terms of the excellent work that had been accomplished during the 34 years since the mission had commenced operations in the district. It was wonderful to observe the transformation which had come to these people, who formerly were the most notorious head-hunters of the Pacific. One of the younger generation, the son of a head-hunter, had recently been accepted as a student for the medical school at Suva, which testified ot the educational facilities of the mission, and also indicated the potentialities of the Melanesian people, many of whom could now read and write as a result of their attendance at mission schools. Tlieir industrial work also evoked admiration. It was stated that the board’s objective would lie to re-establish the medical unit in 1938. Sister Edna White was appointed to the Helena Goldie Hospital.
