QUEENSLAND UNDERTAKINGS. BRIDGE, DAM AND ROADS. A passenger by the Monowai, which arrived at Auckland this week from Sydney, was Mr J. R. Kemp, Commissioner for Main Roads, Queeslaud. who is making a short visit to New Zealand. The Queensland Government, said Mr Kemp, had embarked upon a large reading programme, and from July 1 last lip to the present had spent £850,000 on roads in the State. The expenditure in the last financial year was £1.600,000. The Construction Boards of the Bureau of Industry, Queensland, of which he was at present chairman, Mr Kemp continued, were now engaged in the construction of a large_ bridge over the Brisbane River at Kangaroo Point at a cost of more than £1,500,000. The total length qf tile structure was about two-thirds of a mile, the centre span being 900 ft. The engineer was Dr. J. J. C. Bradfield, who was responsible for tho erection of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Tho work was being financed by a loan on the security of the toll revenue. Mr Kemp said the construction of the Kangaroo Point bridge and other works had been started primarily with the object of relieving unemployment. A similar undertaking was the Stanley Iliver dam, ivhich was being constructed at a cost of £1,750,000. It would serve a dual purpose, the prevention of floods and the provision of water for Brisbane and Ipswich.
