MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. • PROGRESS OF WORKS. Tlie monthly meeting of the Iviwitea County Council was held at Kimbolton yesterday, Cr L. T. McLean presiding. Also present were Crs W. P. Shaw, D. T. Couper. W. G. Claph.un. J. Beard, !J. A. Williamson and W. Hair. CORRESPONDENCE. From the Valuation Department, advising payment of advance subsidy on general rates in respect of the current year, amounting to £loso.—The county. ! clerk said the payment was more prompt this year than it had been m the past.—Received. From the Public Works Department, advising payment of subsidy on account of the Kimbolton reconstruction mid sealing work, amounting to £382 10s. — Received. ' ~ From the Kairanga County Council, fonvnrding n cheque for £172 16s Id, being the council’s portion of the heavy traffic license fees collected for the quarter ended November 11, 1935.—Receivcd. From the Commissioner of Transport, forwarding a copy of an Ordcr-in-Coitncil and warrant amending the Heavy Motor-Vehicle so as‘ to confirm the existing arrangements whereby the collecting authorities arc authorised to deduct 5 per cent of the henvy traffic fees before paying and providing that when the Minister the fees to tho distributing authority, is requested to apportion the total henvy traffic fees for any heavy traffic district lie is authorised to deduct >1 per cent of the fees towards the expenses of the Government in investigating the proper apportionment .-The countv clerk said the letter denied up some ‘doubt that had arisen regarding the validity of the clause empowering the collecting authority to deduct, 6 per cent of the Tec. The question had never been raised before and the point was now cleared up definitely. RATE STATEMENT.

Specials: Outstanding at April 1, 1935, £215 7s 4d; paid. £B3 11s lOd; outstanding to date, £l3l 15s 6d. Hospital: Qutstnndiiig at April 1, 1935. £75 5s Id; paid. £3O 10s; outstanding to date, £44 15s Id. Power: Outstanding, at April 1, 1935, £lO 19s 3d; paid, £2 15s lOd; outstanding to date, £8 3s sd. The report was adopted. COUNTY FINANCES. The county bunk balances were reported upon as under: —County fund account, dr., £3369 13s Id; employees’ accommodation special loan account, or., £26 9s lid; do., fixed deposit, £700; Kimbolton cemetery account, cr., £l4 6s 4d; land fund No. 2 account, cr., £227 7s 2d; Rangiwahia cemetery account, cr., £lO 11s 9u ; Waitutia cemetery account, cr., £2 19s 4d. —Adopted. GENERAL. The overseer was instructed, to improve the dangerous portion of the road leading to Mr C. Smith’s property in tho Knuwhntnti Valley, at a cost not to exceed £2O. The council decided to inform Mr .T. Galhis, of Waituua, that it was not empowered to issue to him a dangerous goods licenso. KIMBOLTON ROAD SEALING. The consulting engineer to the council (Mr H. Sludden) reported as follows on the sealing work in lvimbolton Road:—“Construction on the iour-mile stretch from Cheltenham to Coulter’s Line is completed except shoulder drains, haunches, boulder drains in certain wet areas and some side drains. The tar priming coat is being applied to the first three miles with the exception of tlie regraded hill near Cheltenham. Another, although primed, will need a considerable amount of attention yet. The fourth mile is not yet ready for priming, but requires more consolidating by traffic. The primed road will be allowed to carry traffic for several weeks uni A it is thoroughly set up and tested and after any weaknesses have been rectified the bitumen sealing coat and chips will be applied.” OVERSEER’S REFORT.

Mr I'\ H. Eggers, county overseer, reported as follows: —Cheltenham riding: Tiie sections of the main highways have been kept in iuir condition by tile power grader plant; also a section of the Cheltenhafn Cross ltoad. All roads are at present in fair condition. The contractor bus completed his contract lor carting out maintenance metal, an additional 175 cubic yards having been delivered on the Cheltenham Cross Hoad during the month. The roadman has attended to the usual maintenance work throughout the riding as well as taking delivery of the maintenance metal. Kiwitea riding: The section of the No. 52 main highway lias been kept in fair condition by the power grader plant. The roadman lias been engaged cleaning out water channels and general repair work on Perry’s and Beaconsfiefd Valley Hoads. I have been informed by the contractor that he intends resuming carting out further maintenance metal in the Kiwitea and Kimbolton ridings during the current month. Wnituna riding: The section of No. 377 main highway has been kept in good condition by the power grader plant. The contract lor the suppl3 T and delivery of maintenance metal has been completed, the additional quantities delivered during the month being 90 cubic yards on the Kangitikei Valley Hoad south and 57 cubic yards on the main highway. The roadman has attended to maintenance work as well as taking delivery of the maintenance metal. Ongo riding: The section of No. 377 main highway has received frequent attention from the power grader plant and is at present in very fair condition. Tile roadman has attended to maintenance work throughout the riding, us well as assisting with work in the Cheltenham and Waituna ridings. Maintenance metal carted out to date by the contractors totals 1081$ cubic yards. There is approximately 150 cubic yards to be delivered on the Paroraugi Hoad to complete the contract. Kimbolton riding: The sections of Nos. 52 ai'ld 53 main highways have been kept in fair condition by the power grader plant. The roadmen have attended to general repair work throughout the riding. A section of Mcßeth’s Line has been trimmed and shaped by the power grader plant. The contractor is to resume carting out maintenance metal during the current month. Peep-o-Day riding : The quantities of maintenance metal delivered on roads other than main highways by the contractor are 037$ cti. yards. The contractor has made a start delivering metal on the section of the No. 52 main highway. The roadmen have been engaged attending to maintenance work as well as taking delivery of the maintenance metal. Pakihikura riding: The road-

men have attended to maintenance work as well as assisting with grading work. A considerable amount of grading work has been carried out in tliis riding by No. 2 grading plant, and ill consequence the roads are very much improved. All the necessury grading work should be completed at an early date. Maintenance metal will be carted out when tile contractor completes similar work in the Peep-o-Day qnd Rangiwaliia ridings, No. 52 main highway.—Adopted.
