SCHOLARSHIP FUND

RETENTION SOUGHT. Per Pros Association. AUCKLAND, Jan. 21. An eloquent plea for the retention of the Taranaki Scholarship fund for use in Taranaki only, which was made to the university senate by Mr J. A. Valentine, made a marked impression on the members, but they, nevertheless, decided to refer the matter to the executive committee to approach the Government with a view to broadening the scope of the use of the fund. •The Public Trustee had advised the Senate that the balance to the credit of this fund was over £31,000. Mr Valentine traced the history of the endowment since 1868, and said he could not understand the New Zealand University trying to filch the proceeds of these reserves. Taranaki was entitled to enjoy the fruits of the foresight of its pioneers. He granted that the fund was too big, but they had proposals for using it. It would all be required in the days to come when a university college was established in Taranaki.

Mr Valentine received rounds of applause at the end of his speech, but the members voted by a large majority for the retention of the clause to which he took exception.
