CONTROL OF RIVERS.

MANAWATU-OROUA BOARD. The Manawatu-Oroua River Board met yesterday. Those present were Messrs B. G. Gower (in the chair), T. D. Lynch, H. J. Lancaster, W. Jackson, J. G'allesen and R. J. Law. The chairman (Mr A. A. Mitchell) was unable to be present. The report of the clerk (Mr R. H. Spencer) showed that when due accounts had been met the debit at the bank would be £391 6s Id. The overdraft limit was £4OO. The amount outstanding in rates from previous years amounted to £250 5s 2d. The special rates struck for the current financial year as yet not paid were shown as follow: No. 1 area, £64 2s 6d ; No. 2 area, £49 7s 3d; No. 3 area, £279 -is 8d; No 4 area, £254 9s 2d. The total was thus £897 8s 9d.

The clerk reported at length on correspondence with Government departments in regard to loan matters. The position now was that the sanction of the Local Bodies Loans Board had been obtained for the raising of £6OO for the No. 1 area and a poll was to be taken on Thursday for the raising of a loan of £BOO in the No. 4 area. To meet expenses incurred by urgent flood damage repair work at the Oroua River £3OO was to bo raised under Section 7 of the Local Bodies Finnuce Act, 1921-22, by consent of the Minister of Internal Affairs. The board decided that the 10 pc cent, penalty on unpaid rates should become operative on February 22. Repairs are to be effected to a defective floodgate at Lower Koputaroa in No. 1 separate area.
