MARTON, Jan. 18. When the Marton Swimming Club lield its club night on Thursday, after the events had been run off the opportunity was taken to bid farewell to the club’s president (Mr A. 0. Wimsett) and Mrs Wimsett, who are leaving shortly for Taihape. Several speakers paid tribute to the work that Mr Wimsett had done for the club, and on behalf of the members Mr W. J. Mogridge presented Mr Wimsett with a fireside chair. The fqurth athletic meeting of the Chainey Cup series was staged last evening, some keenly contested races resulting. Details of the main events are: —One mile cycle: Tv, Ellorv 1, IT. Archibald 2, Ci. Button 3. Twomile cycle: R. Ellery 1, J. Ellery 2, Iv. Ellery 3. Relay, race: Miss Cole’s team 1, TV. Bush’s team 2. Three-mile cycle: Tv. Ellery 1, R. Ellery. 2, H. Archibe'd 3. With only one more meeting to be held the points in the .Athletic Club’s series are as follow: Cvcling (Chainey Cup): C. The funeral of the late Charles Edwin Way took place on Sunday afternoon at Marton, when a large cortege of mourners from all parts of the district followed the casket to its last resting place in the Mount View Cemetery. Rev. Win. Raine conducted ait impressive service at the parents’ residence in Follett Street, and afterwards at the graveside. The high esteem in which Mr "Way was held was shown in the beautiful floral tributes that adorned the casket. which included wreaths from Auckland, Wellington, Wanganui and New Plymouth, and also floral tributes from the Marton Jockey Club, Rangitikei Hunt Club, Marton A, and P. Association, Court Little John A.0.F., St. John Ambulance and Nursing Division, Foxton United Sports Association, Foxton (Racing Club, New Zealand Auto-cycle Union, the . wood and coal merchants of Wanganui, also friends in all parts of. the North Island. The pall-bearers were Messrs Clinton Way (Feilding), Norman Way (New Plymouth), Albert Way (Levin), George Trott (Palmerston North), cousins of deceased, and Messrs A. C. Wainwright (Wanganui) and iJV. S. Cameron (Marton). The chief mourners were his father (Mr Arthur Way), two brothers (Messrs Percy and Jack), Messrs Alfred, Harry and William Way (New Plymouth), Ernest Way (Feilding), J. Henriehs and G. Nicholson (Wellington) and Thomas Jordfdi (Haleombe), uncles of deceased. The late Mr Way was born in Marton in 1899 and passed peacefully away in a private hospital on Saturday morning after a short illness. For the past ten years he had been a resident of Wanganui, as a partner in the firm of Messrs Way ami Wilson, coal merchants. Being of a kind and genial disposition, he was highly respected by all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance. Ho was unmarried.
