SPANISH CRISIS.
WHY GOVERNMENT FELL, !
The recent Spanish crisis was due to the Government’s decision to dissolve Parliament rather than to face the possibility of being impeached by the Monarchists and tile Right V ing, on the ground that the suspension of Parliament was unconstitutional. A recent swing in 'political opinion towards the Right obviously alarmed President Zamora, who is most anxious for a strong Centre Party. The probability is that during the elections the Socialists and Communists will join up with Syndicalists and Left Wing Republicans, while the Monarchists, Clericals, and Conservatives will join up. ,At any rate an opportunity will he given the country to decide definitely for or against the Republic. If a new Centre laity, which enthusiasts are trying to form, materialises, it will endeavour to sidetrack the hostility to the Goi eminent by jettisoning the Fascist elements, who bear the main brunt of popular disapproval, because of recent wages cuts which have given millions back to the Church and to absentee landlords. , TT ... It was noteworthy that General \ lllegas was lately relieved of his command at Saragossa, following rumours that the military elements were preparing a coup d’etat, but nothing untoward occurred at Saragossa. Independent observers believe that iSenor Azana, leader of the Socialist Left Wing, litis the largest following in the country, including workers and intellectuals. If he is able to ally himself with Senor Maura and the Republican Right group, the Spanish Republic lias the best chance of a peiiod of-peace and quiet.
