SAMOAN - STORM.
HAVOC BY WIND. LAUNCH MISSING. APIA, Jan. 17. After yesterday’s storm the wind and rain had slightly abated this morning. The Hauraki, which was forced to put to sea, returned to port and loaded part of her cargo. She put' to sea again to-night as the weather is still uncertain. Considerable damage was done to the breadfruit trees. ' A native child, six years of age, was killed in the village of Salemoa when a coconut tree fell and smashed through the roof of a house. Roads and bridges are washed out in several places in outside districts. A hurricane occurred at Keppel Island at 2.30 p.m., G.M.T. Jhe barometer fell to 29.03, and the wind reached force El 2. The radio station aerial is down. It is estimated that 70 per cent, of the banana crop lias boon lost. 'The Cape York shipment of 5000 (vises to Auckland in February lias been cancelled. The Hauraki sailed this afternoon. ' . . . The motor launch Tialiiu which left Apia on Friday at 10 a.m. with 20 passengers for Pagopago and mails to connect witli the Monterey, is reported missing.
