SHORT OF PETROL
SLEDGED TWENTY MILES. STORY OF MISHAP. BOTH MEN SAFE. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) (British Official Wireless.) Received January 18, 11.15 a.m. RUGBY, Jan. 17. The full story of the rescue ol Mr Lincoln Ellsworth and Mr T. liollicklvenyon has yet to be told, and further radio messages are eagerly awaited from the British research ship Discovery 1.1. Atmospherics interfered with wireless communications mini the Discovery and there were corrupt groups in yesterday’s message, while to-day’s radio reports are incomplete. Experts consider it probable that the aeroplane sent out from the Discovery, alter locating tiie missing men and the ’plane, returned to the vessel, possibly owing to the fading light yesterday, and this morning returned to tiie spot, lauded, and picked up the two airmen. Until these messages were received from the Discovery 11 nothing had been heard of Mr Ellsworth and his companion since their last wireless message on November 24. Messages received in London Irom Urn Discovery recorded the subsequent meeting of the ship’s party with Mr Kenyon, who returned to the ship, having reported li is companion alive, but suffering from a slight cold. The latest message received announces that another ship’s party returned last night with Mr Ellsworth. The finding of the lost airmen, lor whose safety hopes had been gradually failing, caused a sensation and the newspapers comment on the coincidence that the rescue has been carried out by tiie same British research ship which, almost exactly two years ago, similarly interrupted a scientific expedition in an emergency and took Dr Potaka, of New Zeaiand, to the American, Admiral Byrd, who was ill in the Antarctic The Discovery’s messages also say that the airmen state that they ran out of petrol 20 miles from the base and sledged in. They were unable to report, as the transmitter switch caused a radio failure. WARM COMMENDATION. RESCUED AND RESCUERS. AUSTRALIAN COMMENT. Received January 18, 12.25 p.m. Sidney, Jan. is. The master and ship’s company of the Discovery, and the members of the R.A.A.F., are to be congratulated on the happy result of their co-operation in tins unfamiliar region, and further details of their activities will be awaited with interest. “The people of Australia, and the world generally, will rejoice with the citizens of America, as they have sympathised with them in these weeks of anxiety, in the news that the intrepid explorer and his gallant pilot are salt* and well.” Mr J. A. Lyons lias offered his congratulations to the commander of the Discovery and those associated with him. .
