FIGHTING SERVICES
IMPORTANT DISCUSSIONS. CO-ORDINATION PLAN. TASK FOR MINISTER. (United Press, Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received January IS, 9 a.m. LONDON, Jan. 17. The Manchester Guardian’s political correspondent says the Defence Ministers and chiefs of staff of the fighting services have met four times during the week. They not only discussed rearmament plans, but lengthily considered plans for co-ordinating the defence administration. It is believed it was decided to appoint a Minister' to undertake this task. This does not involve the creation of a special Ministry. It is believed the co-ordination, also mobilisation, of industry for war, may be attained by making the Minister of Defence the chairman of the two existing sub-com-mittees on Imperial Defence. Mr MacDonald, who has had long experience presiding over the Committee of Imperial Defence, is favoured for the new position which, alternatively, may be given to the former Foreign Secretary (Sir Samuel Hoare) if he is sufficiently restored in health.
