GALATEA ESTATE
SPEEDY SETTLEMENT. DEVELOPMENT WORK. WHAKATANE, Jan. 16. Mr A. F. Moncur, M.P. for Rotorua, told members of the Whakatane Chamber of Commerce that steps were being taken by the Minister of Lands (Hon. F. Langstoue) to settle the Galatea country as speedily as the development of land would permit, and lie predicted that there would be at least 12 settlers on the Galatea estate next year. Mr Moncur said that 34 sections were to be balloted for next month, and the nine sharemilkers already there would be allowed to take up the sections they were at present occupying. Another 4000 acres lying to the north of the developed area were being prepared for settlement next year, and this would bring the edge of the settlement 10 miles nearer Whakatane. Good progress was also being made with the development of the Waihau native flats, and 700 acres were readj' for occupation under the native consolidation scheme. Other privately-owned land in that area was showing signs of extensive improvement.
