GIFT EVENING.
Mr and Mrs G. C. Petersen, of Mere Mere Avenue, on Monday held a gift evening in honour of Miss E. Tankersley, of Terrace End,‘who is shortly to be married. Mrs Petersen received her guests wearing a smart frock of black silk velvet, and was assisted by Miss Coyla Cairns, who wore floral crepe. The guest of honour was attired in floral crepe georgette. Bridge was enjoyed, Miss Piercey and Mr S. Martin proving the winners. Miss Tankersley was made the recipient of some pleasing gifts, for which Mr Martin, on behalf of Miss Tankersley and himself, returned thanks. Supper was served as an interlude. Those present were Mr and Mrs C. A. Small, Mr and Mrs W. H. Watson, Mr and Mrs G Avern, Mrs Heald, Miss Piercey, Messrs E. and A. Lancaster and 0. Doel. THREE TYPES. The Queen’s daughters-in-law, represent, rs it happens, three different tvpes (points out the Daily Mirror), the Duchess of York has come to be known as a pattern mother, deeplyinterested in national motherhood. The Duchess of Kent will always wield a powerful influence on fashion. The Duchess of Gloucester is the modern out-of-door girl, not very much interested in town clothes, the pioneer woman, the athletic, tweed : skirted type which has always been an important factor in our life since crinolines were hung up for good by our great grandmothers. . , Jewels from the Royal collection were to be given to the Duchess of Gloucester as a wedding present from the King. His Majesty once declared that a woman looks best in gems matching her eyes, and he followed this precept when making his choice, and presented the Duchess -with sapphires. The King gave these stones to the Princess Roval on her marriage, hut the Duchess of York received turquoises, and the brown-eyed Duchess of Kent topazes.
