SERIOUS CHARGE.
Per Press Association. HASTINGS, Dec. 11. An elderly man retired, farmer of Raupare, whose mental condition has warranted his having an attendant for some time, and whose name was suppressed meantime, was charged before Mr Miller, S.M., this morning with attempting to murder his wife about 9 o’clock last night., His wife is now making satisfactory progress in hospital. Accused was remanded for a week for an alienist to investigate his mental condition. „ Senior-Sergeant Macnamara said accused, who is nearly 70 years old, attacked his wife with a table knife and injured her throat while she was writing a letter. The attendant who Jived with accused and his wife was out of the room- at the time. He heard screams and when he went into the room he saw the wife with a gash in the throat. The police and a doctor were summoned. The Magistrate said tho facte suggested that accused was mentally unbalanced, which he found was supported in a Supreme Court order relating to his property. After the alienist’s report was received, if accused stood trial his name would be published. Till then it was right that the name be suppressed.
