At a cost of many hundred thousand dollars, American railway companies have introduced air-conditioning systems. Through the agency of these plants, it was possible to cross the Californian desert in the heat of summer, and the temperature inside the cars would remain constant at 70 degrees. Similarly, the talkie theatres were air conditioned, and very comfortable as the result. Rotarian M. S. Spence told the Napier Rotary Club that the Americans made the traveller very comfortable. The London County Council now | spends £38,000,000 a year. This is more than three times the figure for twentyfive years ago.
