PAHIATUA

PAHIATUA, Nov. 29. _ The annual birthday part of the Kaitawa Women’s Institute was held recently and the success of the evening was a credit to all concerned. The programme opened with the singing of the institute song “Comrades and Friends,” and then dancing was interspersed with songs and other items. Illocutionary numbers were rendered by little Doreen Chisnall. in costume, Misses Ngaire and Valmai Burr of Pahiatua, and the little Wylie twins and their brother John, of Kaitawa, and songs by the little Murch twins, of Pahiatua. In the supper interval the president (Mrs Gibson) was presented by Mrs Jowers, on behalf of the Kaitawa members, with a bouquet, the recipient expressing her thanks and thanking all those who had contributed to the success of the evening. The candles on a beautiful birthday cake, which had been iced by Mrs W. Lett, were lit by the vice-president (Mrs Kerridge) and blown out by the youngest member of the institute. Peggy Burgess. Mrs Gibson then cut the cake. An amusing playette was staged by members of the Hamua Institute. The playette was “Hezekiah Helps” and the part of Hezekiah. a New Zealand farmer, was taken by Miss Bailey, and that of Anne his wife (and an institute member) by Miss C'avanagh. Miss McLaughlin, of Hamua, was the producer. The institute banner with its emblem of pansies, was featured on the wall of the stage. Dance music was supplied by a band of willing friends of the institute, Mrs W. H. Murch (of the Pahiatua Institute) at the piano accompanied by Messrs Murch (cornet), and R. Dave.y (violin). Mr J. Algie, of Masterton Road (accordeon) and 0. Wood (piano accordeon). Greetings from the Busli-Wai-rarapa Federation were conveyed by Mrs R. C. Austin, seconded by Mrs Hobbs, the latter also conveying the Hamua Institute’s greetings. There were also greetings by Mrs J. A. Ross from Mangatainoka and several others. The successful participants in novelty dances were: Children’s lucky spot, Doreen Chisnall and John Wylie; adults’ lucky spot, Miss Mona Burgess and partner; Monte Carlo, Miss J. Austin and Mr Lloyd. The duties of M.C. were carried out by Mr N. Checldey. The members of the Makuri Women’s Institute were entertained by Mrs R. A. Wilson at “Waito” recently. The secretary read a satisfactory report. It was decided to send a hamper to Porirua, the insitute to give £1 and each member to contribute towards it. Mrs 0. Menkin read an interesting report of the council meeting at Hamua, and Mrs Berry was the mover of a hearty vote of thanks. Mis C. Jennings read the Horoeka report. The competition will be a Christmas gift with appropriate label. Rev. P. Wiltshire will give an address on “The Oxford Group Movement.” Mrs H. Paterson has been invited to attend. Afternoon tea was served by Misses 0. and N. Johnson and J. Powell. Owing to the weather, a putting competition was held on the sun verandah. The spray and posy competitions, judged by' Miss Wilson (New Plymouth) and Miss Campbell (Christchurch), were won by Mrs R. Smart and Mrs Dransfield respectively. The putting competition was won by Mrs Taylor and the 2>rize for non-players by Mrs Menkin. After community singing and miscellaneous readings Mrs Dransfield moved a vote of thanks to Mrs Wilson. As the result of a fall while he was playing at the Alfredton School grounds, Ronald James Cooper was admitted to the Pahiatua Hospital on Thursday. He suffered a dislocation of an elbow, but is now progressing well. He is a son of Air and Airs J. 0. .Cooper. Sir Alfred Ransom has left for Wellington, accompanied by his private secretary, Air A W. Alulligan. Sir Alfred is to attend the meeting of Cabinet to-morrow. Air R. Oxley has donated a medal to the Pahiatua Swimming Club for competition this season.
