CITY DECORATIONS.
(To the Editor.) go In- your paper of the 19th instant’'l noticed a report of a committee meeting of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association, also in other columns of your paper reports concernine the general activities or the Jubilee Show just held. On reading all the information one must realise the vast amount of time, energy and hard work put in to the affairs of tlie association by the president committeemen and all others connected with the association who deserve appreciation and hearty thanks for their labours m the interests of the association aim tne furtherance also of the city ot 1 almerston North. I noted in the report many suggestions which were made by interested people and which have received the thanks of. the committee and which also are to receive consideration, and I am sure this enthusiastic body is always open to receive further suggestions which will advance the mutual interests of the association and our city For many years past there has been more or less considerable apathy in the matter of decorating the city with bunting, flags and other general decorations, but at the Jubilee ‘--how just over it was painfully appalling to seo such apathy by the business people and others in tlie matter I refer to. Of all the events in the history ol out association the Jubilee Show was an outstanding event when a special effort should have been made by decorating the town with bunting, flags, etc., which would have aroused the citizens and visitors to the fact/ that Palmerston North was celebrating a very festive event. On very close observation I could see but only five flags flying, one on the rotunda, allother on tlie City Council chambers, and three on tlie Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s offices. Palmerston North is very fortunate in having some very excellent buildings, most ot which have flag poles, and generally speaking there is an abundance of flag poles throughout the commercial area which, if decorated with flags on such occasions, would create and enhance tlie general interests and appearances of the city. The association has been fortunate in having the valuable assistance for some time of the Citizens’ Show Committee, and more recently the 50,L*J0 Club, and I cannot understand why this very important matter, of decorating our city- has not received attention in this direction both from the association and all affiliated bodies. At the last Winter Show (I think it was) a late effort was made, no doubt with the best of intentions to decorate the principal verandah posts, etc., by tying a few bundles of greenery round the posts and other places of prominent buildings, but even at the last festive occasion apparently this faded out. It is to be hoped in the mutual interests of the association, and our city also, this, in future, will receive the attention in the direction I have pointed out. Hoping this letter will bear fruit.—l am, etc., BARE POLES.
