ACTIVE COMPETITION. A GOOD OPENING. Tlie following cabled reports on tho London wool sales were received yesterday afternoon : Levin and Co., Ltd.—The auctions open ed with a large attendance of buyers. All sections of the trade are buying. As at present arranged, the sales will close on December 5. Compared with tho closing rates of last sale, we quote Greasy Merino: Best, Id p er lb higher; average, Id per lb higher. Fine hahbreds, 50/56’s, Id per. lb higher. Extra line crossbreds, 48/50’s, 3-4 dto Id per lb higher; lino, 46/48’s, 3-4 dto Id per lb higher; medium, 44/46’s, 3-4 d per-lb higher; coarse, 40/44’s, 3-4 d per lb higher; low, 36/40's, 3-4 d per lb higher. Slipo wools generally, Id to per lb higher. Scoured Merinos. 2d to 2jd per lb higher. Dalgcty and Coy., Ltd.—Large attendance, fair selection; Homo trade and Continent active. As compared with closing rates of last series;—

Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., and Abraham and Williams, Ltd.—An average attendance of buyers, among whom competition was animated. Continental and Brail ford buyers were the chief operators, while American representatives bought sparingly. An average selection of wool was offered As compared with closing rates for the September series, all of wool are selling at improved values. Merino and fine halfbred wools arc ?d up, halfbred Id up, thrcc-quarterbred ?d up, fine crossbred lid up, medium Id up, crossbred, coarse crossbred, and lambs’ wool up. Scoured wools aro from 5 per cent, to 10 per cent, higher. Lambs’ slipe wools are from 7$ per cent, to 10 per cent, higher, and other slipcs aro 15 per cent, higher. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Coy., Ltd. —There was a full attendance, competition by Home and Continental buyers being keen. As compared with last sale’s closing rates, prices are higher about 5 per cent, to 7i per cent, for greasy Merino; prices are higher about 10 per cent, for scoured Merino and crossbred. Competition on German and French account is active. The opening catalogues were representative N.Z. Farmers’ Co-operative Distributing Co., Ltd. —Good attendance and competition. Merinos: Greasy, 5 per cent, to 7i per cent.; scoured, 5 per cent, to 10 per cent; crossbreds, greasy and scoured. 10 per cent, to 15 per cent.; slipcs, 10 per cent, to 12£ per cent.; all up. Quantity available, 125,000 bales. • . The Bank of Australasia has received the following cable from Balme and Thomas, woolbrokers:—Merinos, 7£ per cent, dearer, crossbreds generally 10 to 15 per cent, dearer, slipes 10 to 15 per cent, dearer, scoured crossbreds 10 per cent, dearer compared with closing rates of last series. Tho Bank of New Zealand (produce department) .—The sales have opened with strong competition and large attendance of buyers. There is an active demand by Home and foreign buyers. Compared with the close of last series, Merino is Id to l£d per lb higher, and crossbreds Jd to Id per lb higher.
