THE INDEPENDENTS.
(To tho Editor.) Sir, —Aluch has been said and written for and against tlie value of the Independent in politics. It is an old argument which crops up at every election and no one appears to have solved the question as to whether tlie Independent is desirable or not. Air Alansford. has stated from the platform that lie is entirely opposed to party politics in any shape or form. Now, sir, may 1 bo permitted to ask Air Alansford or his supporters the following question :—What would tlie position be supposing a majority of Independents were elected to Parliament, would the Independents then become a party ? I have in mind the case of Air H. Atmore who, as the Independent AI.P. for Nelson, accepted tlie position of Alinister for Education in the Ward Government and, although he was opposed to party Government, he then became one of a party. Now later when the Nationalist Party was formed and Air Atmore was relegated to the rank and file, he once more assumed independence ; looks like a case of tlie ins and outs, but only serves to show what this came of polities is.—l am, etc., LIBERAL.
