ESPIONAGE CHARGE.
GERMAN IN CUSTODY. LONDON. November 19. Dr. Gortz, who has been arrested on a charge of espionage, has been in custody for a .week. The German Embassy has supplied him with a list of German-speaking lawyers. It is understood that the charge related to alleged espionage at the Royal Air Force aerodrome at Manston, near Broadstairs. Dr Gortz was charged first with contravention of the official Secrets Act, and, secondly, with conspiring with another person not in custody to commit offences against the Act. Ur. Gortz is at present at Brixton prison awaiting trial. He and his girl companion were well knowii at Broadstairs, where they rented a furnished house. Both frequently rode a motorcycle, the doctor usually on the pillion, and attracted attention by both'wearing heavy aviation coats and helments. A young aircraftsman with whom the girl first struck up a friendship first saw her riding thus past his mother’s house daily. The Daily Mail says that Dr. Gortz is stated to have formerly served in the German Air Force Ho holds medical and law degrees.
