SANDON
(From Our Own Correspondent.) - SANDON, Nov. 20.. The sixth annual ball of the Miniature Rifle Club was held last Friday evening, when the hall was packed to capacity. The hard work put in by the committco was well rewarded, and special thanks are due to tho secretary (Mr P. D. Gedye). Tho hall was tastefully decorated with streamers, balloons and greenery. Novelty dances were won by Miss N. Avery and Mr C. Bird (Lucky Gay Gordons), Miss L. Lurnsden and partner and Miss F. Anderson and partner (lucky spot), and Mr C. Oppatt and Miss B. Torry (Monte Carlo). A competition for d. cake was won by Miss Nora Richardson. At a suitable juncture the president (Mr W. J. Jenkins) thanked all present for their patronage, also tho donors of trophies and all those who had assisted the club during the past season. He then called on Mr P. Gedye to present the trophies to tho various winners, who were as follow: —Club championship, Ken Lumsden; B grade championship, P. M. Gedyo; A grado star, Keith Lumsden; B grade star, W. Jenkins; C grade star, W. Mnddock; Mr C. E. Bailey’s trophy, P. D. Gedye; Mr W. J. Jenkin’s trophy, \V. A ■ Lumsden; Mr P. M. Gedye’s trophy, P. D. Gedyo; Mr A. Stevenson’s trophy, F. Moyer; Mr W. J. Jenkins’s trophy for most improved shot, R. Oppatt. Saturday afternoon saw the official opening of tho Tennis Club’s courts. The weather was gloriously fine and close on two hundred were present, visitors coming from Halcombe, Rongotea, Carnarvon and Palmerston North. The opening ceremony was performed bv Mr J. Linklater, M.P., who expressed pleasure at being invited to bo present and congratulated tho club on the success it had attained in such a short poriod. Mr H. J. Fagan, representing tho Park Board, referred to the creditable work the members had achieved in providing two courts, and wished tho club continued sucess. Afternoon tea was provided and 6erved by the lady members. The afternoon was spent in friendly matches.
Mrs and Miss A’Court, of Sandon, are on holiday in Hawke’s Bay. Calves in the No. 6 group of tho Boys’ and Girls’ Calf Club competitions were judged at the school on Monday afternoon by Mr F. J. Boddy, of Kopane. The quality of the animals was fairly good and there was a good attendance of parents. The chairman of the Sandon School Committee (Mr E. J. Bowatcr) extended a welcome to the entrants, the judge and parents, and advised the children to take a keen interest in the remarks of the judge, Mr Boddy thanked Mr Bowater for his welcome. Flo said he had no fancy for any particular breed; a good cow could be wrapped up in any skin. When the judging was completed, Mr E, Rowe called on the judge, to explain to the children the good points and the defects in several of the calves, his talk being listened to very keenly. Mr H. J. Fagan, a former supervisor, congratulated Mr Rowe, his successor, on the capable manner in which he had carried out his duties, and he thanked everyone for attending the function. Mr E. H. Lange, agricultural instructor of tho Wanganui Education Board, announced the winners of the various competitions and congratulated the respective winners. Afternoon tea was- provided by tho wives of the Sandon School Committee members at the Town Hall, this being greatly appreciated by the guests and parents. The various results have already been published in the ‘(Standard.”
