EKETAHUNA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) EKETAHUXA, Nov. 18. The funeral of the late Mr Carl Olsen took place at the Ekctahuna cemetery on Friday afternoon, the cortege being a lengthy one. Deceased was an ex-service-man, having served his country in the Great War, and a large contingent of returned soldiers were present. The pallbearers were Messrs W., J., and F. Olsen, A. Jacobsen, B. Olsen, and A. Cashman (Wellington). The chief mourners were the widow and only son Peter, and Mrs Adkins (sister), of Wellington. Among the many beautiful wreaths received was one from the local branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, the Boy Scouts and members of tho Gentlemen's Club. Nfr and Mrs Groves are at present visiting Wellington. Mr and Mrs G. Farmer have returned from a holiday spent in Auckland and the Bay of Plenty. The friends of Mr J. M. Davie will regret to hear that ho is at present an inmate of the Palmerston North Hospital. There was a representative gathering of professional and business men of the town, as well as many residents and friends, at the social held in the Public Hall last evening, arranged for the purpose of bidding farowell to Air and Mrs C. C. Smith. Dancing was indulged in to music supplied by a local orchestra. Supper was handed round. Following the supper adjournment, tho Mayor (Mr W. Simpson) referred to Mr Smith's very fine qualities, showing he was a true type of citizen and his departure meant a serious loss to the town. As a close neighbour he had always found him most desirable and in any connection Air Smith had always given of his best. He had played an exceptionally strong part in connection with the erection of the War Memorial and had contributed in no small measure towards the success of the recent jubilee celebrations. As secretary of the Chamber of Commerco he had useful work to further the interests of the town. In asking Air Smith to accept a travelling rug from the burgesses, the Alayor expressed general regret at his departure, and wished Mr and Mrs Smith and family every future happiness and success. Air A. H. Herbert endorsed Iho Alayor’s remarks. Air Nation, on behalf of the nigger minstrel troupe, of which Air Smith was a. leading member, referred to the great interest and splondid performances of their guest. They were extremely sorry to leso so valued a member, and in asking him to accept a ease of pipes as a parting gift from the troupe he trusted in future Air Smith would recollect tho many hours spent among them. Miss Betty Curry presented A'lrs Smith with a very handsome bouquet, accompanying it being many good wishes for her future welfare. Upon rising to respond, Air Smith was warmly applauded and accorded musical honours. He stated that during his twentytwo years of residence here he had faced many problems and many ups and down, but the problem of bidding them farewell and taking his departure was the biggest and hardest yet. He had spent a very pleasant time and made many friends. Whatever little he had done had always been in the interests of the citizens and the town generally and he trusted that both would continue to prosper. He thanked them all for their many good wishes and gifts Air Smith had held the position of manager of the local branch of a Wairarapa firm and at the close of business on Saturday evening, the staff met and presented him with a travelling rug Air Smith suitably replied. Mr Pye, of Alasterton, has been appointed head accountant for the same firm and took up his duties here last week.
