HIGH SCHOOLS

MEETING OF BOARD. The monthly mooting of the High Schools’ Board of Governors and the Technical School Committee was held last night when, in the unavoidable absence of Mr J. A. Nash, Mr J. IV. Rutherfurd presided. Other members present were Mrs M. Aitehison, Messrs T. R. Hodder, W. R. Birnie and D. Monrad. Apologies for absence wore received from Messrs. J. A. Nash, M. 1-1. Oram T. D. Lynch, A. J. Graham, and G. Tremaine. The Director of Education wrote advising that authority had been given for the payment from “incidentals” of a sum up to £5 in connection with the break-up functions of the Boys and Girls’ High Schools, and a similar amount for the Technical School breakup.—Received. . . The Education Department, writing in reply to the board’s suggestion that the rector’s old residence be dismantled and the section sold, advised that the matter would he enquired into when the architect (Mr lj. Savage) was next in Palmerston North. Mr E. R. Hodge, architect to the Wanganui Education Board, writing in regard to the assembly hall for the Givis’ High School, explained that since preparing the first proposal lie had been advised that the cost of such a building must not exceed between £ISOO and £I6OO, and he was preparing plans accordingly. The plans were received and, on the motion of Mr Birnie, the matter was referred to the sub-committee to consider them. REPORTS PRESENTED. The rector of the Boys’ High School (Mr J. Murray) presented the following report:—“The roll number is 38_ with an average attendance of 362. Messrs E. J. l’arr and J. E. Learning (Education Department inspectors) visited tlio school on the 11th and 12th iust. in connection with the award of intennediate leaving certificates and staff grading. Seven boys of Form VI were successful at the recent terms’ examinations of Victoria University College. In connection with the recent A. and R. Show the boys of the agricultural classes again assisted as junior stewards and in other capacities. The boys took part in judging competitions for various classes of stock, gaining first places in four classes. The annual sports were held on Wednesday last. One record was broken, E. Miller setting a new record for the 880yds. The senior free place examination begins on Wednesday and the university entrance and school certificate examinations on December 2. The annual cricket match with Wanganui Collegiate School will bo played on the school grounds on the 27th inst., and the annual match with Napier Boys’ High School, also on the school grounds, on December 12 and 13.” . The principal of the Girls High School (Mrs Rhodes) reported:—“Tho roll is now 244, and the average attendance 221.82. Two girls have obtained positions, and one new pupil lias been enrolled. The garden fete, under the auspices of the Parents’ Association, will be held on M ednesday. At the recent show pupils of the school were very successful, gaining seven firsts, 10 seconds, 7 thirds, and one highly commended. Tho two pupils presented by the school for the terms examination's of Victoria University

were both successful, each obtaining a pass in English 1 and History I. Old girls of the school were also very successful at Auckland University College, Victoria University College, and Canterbury College.” The director of the Technical School (Mr G. G. Hancox) reported as under: “A donation of. £1 for the library lias been received from Miss Mavjs Francis. At the Jubilee Show our students were very successful in the competitive classes, while the exhibition of work attracted much attention. In the various classes the school secured 20 first prizes, 13 seconds. 6 thirds, 3 v.h.c., and 1 h.c. Following on months of hard work by Misses Liu Hancock, R. Benstead, J. Young, E. Lyre, Mr W. Watters and others, we produced the fantastic operetta entitled “The Mystic Mirror.” There wore so many requests for a repeat performance that we staged it again. All tluisc taking part, including the principals, were pupils of the day school. Their standard of performance was very high and_ reflected great credit oil all who assisted in the effort. Members of the board are cordially invited to be present at the following end of year functions :—Parents’ evening, November 28; annual exhibition, November 29 and 30; annual breaking-up function, December 11.” The report was adopted, and approval was given for the spending of up to £lO during the holidays on repairs to desks, etc., while the director was authorised to purchase a motorcycle engine for the lawn mower.
