TOOLEY STREET IMPROVING.

S. ANDERSON’S RUSH TRIPS

(By “Binocular.”) The Yocklcr Service, against which K. Voitre and B. Quinlan arc proceeding for alleged, libel, is reported to run a tipping sheet in Melbourne.' S. Anderson rushed south after the Hawke’s Bay meeting to fulfil engagements, but he was at To Ilapa on Saturday where he rode two winners and was second once. Too ley Street, after a slow beginning, was doing great work over the final stages of tho Ashley Handicap, at liiccarton, and he is duo for something better. No horse carrying No. 7 saddle-cloth has won a Melbourne Cup, but Marabou was the twenty-second winner with seven letters in his name. That is probably as good a way of picking.the winner as any other. C. Emerson intends to give Tuirau and tho two-year-old Sir Hugh a good spell before they are raced again (says a southern writer). Tuirau should benefit by a rest, after being in commission right through the winter. Sir Hugh has shown no form in his races, in spite of promising track work, but he may be better with a bit of age. • Captain Bruce, who recently returned from Australia, is in regular work again at Ellcrsiic under the care of his owner, W. Kemp. He has grown into a solid-looking three-year-old and is also displaying promising speed in his track work. The son of Captain Bunsby and Lady Bruce has no immediate engagements and will not be seen out until later in the season. When in work as a two-year-old this maiden showed considerable promise, but he has never raced in New Zealand.

Scrimmage, by Antagonist from Mad Whirl, the last of tho Chokeborc mares to foal this season, has produced a filly to Winning Hit. The youngster io thus a sister to Fracas and Bun Fight. Bella Rosa has been disposed of by .7. S. Shaw to a patron of his stable. She was so highly rated by handieappors after some successes on the West Coast that it was difficult for her to pay her way, and Shaw sold her at considerably below her value. Courtyard recorded his first win in the South island when he sprung a surprise at Riccarton on Wednesday. His record last season for his present owner was 18 starts for one second and one third placings, and his stake money amounted to £3O. Lady Links, dam of Kinnouil, is a Karamu-bred mare, and is by King Mark from Links, by St. Andrew from Sabra, by St. George from -Miss Flat, by I’cter Flat from Mountain Nymph, by Sir Tatton Sykes. This season Lady Links produced a sister to Kinnouil and has been mated again with Rink Coat. Orcnda, who finished second in hurdle events on each day of the Whangarci meeting, is stated to be a fine big, strong horse, while ho lacks nothing on the score of jumping. He was easily the beet fencer at the meeting, but as these were his first starts ho raced rather greenly. With experience Orenda should turn out more than useful. He is by Lurina, a son of Lucullus, from a Salvadan mare, so that ho_ is bred the right way for jumping, and. it would not be surprising to sec him going on to good company later on. J. E. Bike, Peter Pan’s Melbourne Cup pilot, was dejected alter the race (says the Sporting Globe); so much so, in fact, that he admitted that he had lost all interest in the race owing to Peter Pan’s shockingly bad performance. When asked for his story of the Cup, Pike was reluctant to attempt any comment. “I was terribly disappointed with Peter Pan’s form,” he said. “At no stage in the race was he galloping at all generously, and simply plugged along. I am naturally most disappointed with his form.” Asked if he had seen Marabou, Hot Shot, or Allunga during the race, Pike said that lie was so disgusted with his mount that lie completely lost interest in the race, and did not notice anything.
