IMPOSITION OF SANCTIONS. RESISTANCE BY ITALIANS. (United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received November 19, 12.40 p.lll. LONDON, Nov. 18. The Times Rome correspondent says that Italy was dutifully beflagged in obedience to the Fascist Grand Council. She girded herself up to meet the “ignominious and iniquitous” economic siege laid by fifty foreign nations. The streets- of every town waved with tricolours; large establishments displayed streamers, and the humbler houses little home-made flags.
Apart from scuffles promoted by black skirted students and corner boys who paraded shouting, “Down with sanctions! Down with England!” the city was completely orderly. Armed guards placed a cordon round the British Consulate until sundown. No British citizens were molested. Crowds cheered outside the consulates of the non-sanctionary countries.
Thinking Italians no longer conceal from themselves the gravity of the situation, being aware that the protracted application of sanctions demands sacrifices comparable with 1915. Resistance is already organised so far as can be prepared in advance. Detailed instructions have been formulated for the Customs, banks, and citizens. Henceforward Italy’s borders will be closed to all imports from sanctionist countries.
