COMMISSIONER’S DEATH.
INQUEST OPENED.
SYDNEY, Nov. 18.
The inquest on Mr Montague Henwood, State Conciliation Commissioner, was opened at Penrith. Edwin John Hickey, aged 17, who has been charged with murder, was present in custody during the inquest, which was adjourned until to-morrow. Detective Wilks said that Hickey had admitted depositing at a railway cloakroom a suitcase which Hickey had said “belonged to an old chap who was in the train with me.” Detective Wilks added that when Hickey’s attention was drawn to the blood stains in the railway carriage he said: “That would probably come from the old fellow. I gave him three or four hits with a bottle.”
A cable dated November 4 stated that mystery surrounded the tragic death of Mr Hemvood, whose body was found alongside the railway line near Faulconbridge, 51 miles west of Sydney. At the Central Police Court, Sydney, on November 6, Edwin John Hickey, described as a dairy hand, was remanded on a charge of murdering Mr Henwood.
