DANNEVIRKE, Oct. 22.
Tho management committee of the Southern Hawke's Bay Cricket Association met last evening, Mr E. N. Hogden presiding. A notification was received from the Ormondville Cricket Club that they were entering a team in the Silver Bat competition.—lt was decided to advise the Ormondvillo club that they must put their ground in order. Advice was received from the Dannevirke Borough Council that the association had been granted the use of the Domain for the season. —Received. A communication was received from the Wellington Cricket Association asking whether the association approved of a preliminary match being played prior to the Town v. Country fixture in Wellington, which it was suggested would be played during the Christmas vacation.- —It was decided to approve of the proposal, provided that these fixtures did not clash with the M.C.C. and Hawke Cup matches. Mr F. Armstrong wrote thanking the association for having elected him patron and enclosing donation of £2.—Received with thanks. Advice was received from the New Zealand Cricket Council that Southern Hawke’s Bay was grouped with Hawke’s Bay in the Hawke Cup competition, and also that the new leg-before-wieket rule was to bo played in ail first-class matches this season. —It was decided to ask Hawke’s Bay to nominate a date for a match, which is lo constitute an elimination game in the Hawke Cup competition, and also a return game of last year. It was also agreed that the new legbefore rule be adopted in all local games, and to request Mr A. M. Ongley, of Palmerston North, to give a lecture in Dannovirke on cricket rules.
The annual meeting of tho Rangatira Croquet Club was held yesterday, Mrs G. Harris presiding. The committee reported that tho membership for tile season was 30. The club had had a very satisfactory season, although there was a small loss on the working. The club competitions were well contested. The election of officers resulted : —Patron, Mrs A. Holden: president, Mrs G. llarris; vice-presidents, Mrs Glass and Mrs Soundy; committee, Mesdames Doggett, Hansard, Miller, Nicholls, R. Gillespie, Cross, Wright, and Stewart; treasurer, Mrs A. Gillespie; secretary, Mrs J. F. Bingham ; lion, auditor, Miss J. Thorburn ; club captain, Mrs Glass; tea captain, Mrs Doggett. Friday was fixed as the opening The Dannevirke South School Committee met last evening, Mr P. C. Smith occupying the chair. The headmaster (Mr I. A. Nicoll) re9ported that the roll number was 372 and the average attendance 330. The attendance had been affected by colds and wet woalhcr. The amount collected for the dental clinic this year had been £l6 18s 6d.— Adopted. Reporting on behalf of the visiting committee, Mr Hopkins said tho flower gardens were looking very well. The committee recommended that two wattle trees bo removed, and also that a portion of the boundary fence be repaired. With reference to tho wattle trees, the chairman said Mr Dobson was against their removal. He (Mr Smith) thought the trees had now outlived their usefulness. It was unanimously decided to remove the trees, and that the area be converted into a garden. It was also resolved to ask the Hawke’s. Bay Education Board’s architect, when next in Dannovirko, to inspect the boundary fence. It was left with the headmaster to report to tho next meeting regarding arrangements for this year’s parents’ day. . „ , The newly-formed High School Athletic Club held its first mooting last evening. The winners of the various events were as follow:—7s yards, junior: W. Simpson. 75 yards, senior: W. Robinson. 440 yards, junior: W. Simpson. 440 yards, senior: J. Armstrong. Long jump, junior: M. Leatlierland. Long jump, senior: B. Hunter. . , . Mr D. P. Lindsay, of Dannevirke, former long-distance swimming champion of New Zealand, who did not compete at the championship meeting at Auckland last season, is expected to stage a “come-back this year. It is expected that lie wnl bo a competitor at the next championships at Dunedin. . Tho final of the ladies’ golf championship was played on Saturday, between Miss McDermott and Mrs Hape, Mr C. Riddel umpiring. Miss McDermott, who played stoadily, was superior on the greens and won the match 2 and 1. Prior to his departure for Featherston, Mr B. Watson, formerly teller in the local branch of the Bank of Australasia, was presented by the staff with a token of their goodwill. Mr Watson was also farewelled at a large gathering of his personal friends at the residence ot Mr 11. Henderson, and was the recipient of a presentation.
