WOMEN’S GOLF TITLE

MRS WALKER LEADING

END OF MORNING ROUND.

In the final of the New Zealand women’s golf championship, dicing played at Heretaunga to-day ; Miss Anderson, who was playing brilliantly with ber iron, wore down Mrs Walker, who at one stage was 5 up, to all square at the 17th. but at the 18th Airs Walker sank a long putt to stand 1 up at the end of the morning round. Towards the end Mrs Walker developed a slice that troubled her at times. At the first Miss Anderson was ill a blinker with her second. Mrs Walker was just short of the green. Miss Anderson was poorly out and Mrs Walker sank a 12-footer to win 4 to o. The next four were halved in bogey figures. Mrs Walker’s approach shot was a trifle hard at the sixth and it was halved in birdie 4’s. Miss Anderson misled, an easy putt at tho seventh, taking 6 to 5. At tho next she was on the edge of the rough with her tee shot and put the next into the rough on the other sids of the fairway. Her third was short and she missed a fairly easy putt for a half. The ninth was halved in three.

Mrs Walker turned 3 up. At the tenth both were short with their drives and Mrs Walker struck the hunker with her second. Miss Anderson was on in two, but both missed putts to halve in five. Mrs Walker got into trouble at the next, being in the bunker with her second and too long with her chip. Miss Anderson was on in two and sank a putt for 4to 5. The next two were halved in five, but Miss Anderson got one back at the 14th. They halved tlie next two in l>ogey figures. At tile 17th Mrs Walker was in the bunker to Ike right of the green with ber second and iier chip was too strong. She failed to sink the putt, and Miss Anderson squared the match with four to five. At the last hole Mrs Walker was in the bunker with her second, but sank a splendid putt to win the hole 4 to 5, standing one up. Mrs Walker took 35 for the outward journey and 40 back. Miss Anderson took 38 each ‘way.
