ASHHURST

(From Our Own Correspondent.) ASHHURST, Sept. 23. With a never-failing popularity, and patronised by the usual crowds that have been enjoying the excellent old-time dances, the Ashhurst Town Hall was again the scene of a large gathering on Friday evening when the Returned Soldiers’ Association held a lantern slide lecture and screening of war pictures, with a dance to follow. An introductory speech was made by-Rev. H. B. Gocrtz, after which Mr Groves gave a brief explanation of various war scenes, tho screening of these slides being attended to by Mr Gilshnan. Whilst the pictures of war graves were shown Mr A. Balmcr (Pohangina) sang “Requiem,” followed by the Last Post, played on the cornet by Mr Cook. Concluding tho screenings, a community singing of old favourite songs o,f_ war time, which everyone joined in heartily, was led

by Mr Balmcr. Supper was provided in the adjoining room whero everyone was comfortably seated. Old time and modern dancing took place to music by an orchestra until an early hour. 'The friends of Mr Norman Brewer, who is at present an inmate of tho Palmerston North Hospital, will bo pleased to hear that he is making satisfactory pro- . gross. . 1 The Ashhurst Dofence Rifle Club fired a further practice shoot on Saturday, sixteen taking part in shoots over 300 and 500yds. The weather conditions were fair. A changing front wind caused a good deal of concern to most of the marksmen. The Broadlands men were having their last regular practice this season, and challenged teams from the rest of tho club, the results being: Brcadlands, 275; Ashhurst, 275; Ashhurst A, 274 i The best score at 300yds was that of Ken Romley 31, and at 500vds J. Scailc and Ken Romley 33; grand total, Ken Romley 64, Roy Romley 62 and J. Scarle 61. The following comprised the teams. —Broadlands: Roy Romley 62, W. G.
