MANAWATU SEAT

MR J. K. HORNBLOW AT LEVIN. (From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, Sept. 24. In explanation of his candidature. Mr J. K.' Hornblow addressed a good meeting of .electors in the Century Hall, Levin, last evening. The Mayor CVIr P. \V. Goldsmith) presided and in introducing the speaker referred to his twenty-five years of service cn local bodies in the Manawatu district, making particular reference to Mr Hornblow’s activities in connection with public health and education. Mr Hornblow outlined his reasons for acceding to the deputation’s request that he offor his services as candidate at the forthcoming election, stating the conditions he mentioned at Foxton. He touched on matters of vital interest to Levin and the district, and made special reference to hospital administration, the necessity for a campaign against tuberculosis, and explained the steps already taken by the Palmerston North Hospital Board to set up clinics for the early treatment of this disease. He touched on the tVhirokino highway and expressed the opinion that the construction of all arterial highways should be under the control of the Main Highways Board which should be vested with the power fo levy a fair proportion of the capital ccst on contiguous local authorities. He revived interest in the LovinGreatford railway deviation proposal, which if carried into effect, he said, would find work for a large number of men over a period of three years and prove of inestimable value to the district and a. saving to the country.

Mr Hornblow spoke for an hour and a quarter and received an attentive hearing throughout. At the conclusion of his address the following resolution was carried without any dissentient voice: —'That this meeting approves of the conditions governing the candidature of Mr J. K. Hornblow to represent the Manawatu electorate at the forthcoming general election, and lading the acceptance of the conditions by the sitting member or other prospective candidates pledges him their support at the poll.
