“SALLY.”

MUSICAL COMEDY SEASON. By arrangement with Messrs J. C. Williamson, Ltd., the Palmerston North Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society will stage .Jerome Kern's bright musical comedy “Sally” at the Opera House dor a five night season, commencing to-morrow evening. A foundling known as “Sally of Our Alley” is engaged as a dishwasher in Pops ShendorfTs restaurant. She proves to be a born dancer and with the- assistance of Connie, who is really Constantine, Duke of Czechogovinia, vainly endeavouring to perform the duties of a waiter in the restaurant, she gets the opportunity of dancing for the patrons. Her charms attract Blair Farquhur, the son of a millionaire .financier, w ho falls in love with her; and her dancing appeals to Otis Hooper, from the Anglo-American vaudeville agency, Squatamvillc, who first of all substitutes her for a famous Russian dancer, who is unable to appear at a garden fete given by Richard Farqnhar, the millionaire, and then gels her' engaged- as principal dancer in the Follies. Situations gay and humorous follow each other in close succession, providing the essentials of a delightful musical comedy. There are many opportunities for the ballet, and these arc taken full advantage. of. Mrs W. Whitehousc (Miss Edna Boon) is excellent in the part of Sally, who starts as a dishwasher and finishes as the principal dancer of the Follies. Such a roie gives her ample scope, not only as an actress, but as a premiere dan&cusc. Ballets have been arranged by Crossed Vaughan and Kathleen Boyle. Mr E. G. Spraggori, as Blair Farquhar, and Mr C. Watkins, as •Jimmy bpelwin, nave good vocal opportunities, and Messrs Vernon and J. MeBroarty and Miss U. Hancock supply the comedy. Mr A. J. Graharn is musical director, and Mr Harrison Cook, of Wellington, is in charge of the production, while Mr F. Cousins has been working very hard during the rehearsals as assistant producer.
