ASHHURST.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) ASHHURsT, bept. 16. There was an excellent gathering at the Women’s Institute birthuay social and dance held in tho hall last Friday evening, this being a continuation of tne lunc lion field at the institute last 'luesday afternoon. It was very pleasing to have visitors present from VVoodville, Aokautere, Whakarongo, Colyton. and Bumiythorpc. A splendiu programme wnich had been arranged for the occasion, such as novelty dances and items, kept the company fully entertained. The rtems which wore thoroughly enjoyed were contributed by visitors and lriends, including members of the local institute. The programme comprised :—Pianoforte solo, by Mr 8. Fischer; playette, “City Versus Country,” by • two members of tlie Ashliurst Institute’s drama club, Mrs K. llavill and Miss M. Tromewan; soio, Mrs Hanlon (Woodvillc), accompanists, Miss 8. Read; humorous sketch by Mrs bcott (Aokautere); playette,
“April Showers,” by Aokautere Jjrama Club; solo, Mr H. Bristow, “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere” (aecoinpaniste, Miss M. Bristow). A varied programme of excellent dance music was supplied by an orchestra, extras being provided by Mrs C. Kerrigan, Miss S. Read, and Mr L. Craven. The institute committee were responsible for the tasty supper which added greatly to the success of the evening. The president (Mrs Flowers) welcomed all present and also mentioned that the proceeds from the evening were to be donated to the town hall funds. A special feature was the cutting of the second tier of the birthday cake Liy Mrs Speedy, of Whakarongo, ' while Mrs Jensen, oi (Jolyton, and the president from Aokautere (Mrs Groves) also assisted with this ceremony. Mr \V. N. Brewer (chairman of Ashliurst Hall Committee) thanked the institute members for their wholehearted support in the past and ulso for their generosity in donating the proceeds of tho evening’s entertainment to the town hall fund. In wishing the institute many happy returns of their birthday, Mr Brewer mentioned it was the usual practice to receive birthday gifts, but on this occasion the practice had been reversed, the would-be recipients had become the donors and the hall committee and residents should be very grateful for their activities. Several novelty dances were held, the winners being as foliow:—Monte Carlo, Miss E. Thorne and Mr J. Humphries; Lucky Gay Gordons, Miss Speedy and Maurice Murphy; Statue Log Cabin, Mr and Mrs R. Cook; chocolate guessing, Miss V. Henderson; vase Mrs Williams. Dancing took place until an early hour, tho duties of M.C. being carried out by Mr 11. Woodroofe.
