ROAD EXPENDITURE

COUNTY COUNCIL’S RESOLUTION. Per Press Association. INVERCARGILL, Sept. 14. An important change of policy is contained in a resolution referring to the subsidy on road expenditure carried at the monthly meeting of the Southland County Council yesterday. Tile text of the resolution is as follows: —“That the Southland County Council urge tire Government to introduce legislation during this session of Parliament authorising payment to county councils of a £ for £ subsidy on all expenditure covering both construction and maintenance on roads other than main highways, such subsidy to be in lieu of tbe present subsidy on general rates.”

If these representations are given effect to, the council would be better off by £6OOO a year under this scheme than by the present subsidy on rates. Some of the other counties would be worse off, because of the smaller collections in rates, but as the chairman (Mr T. Golden) explained, rates are subsidised up to £IO.OOO, and, as tlie council collects something like £30,000 in rates each year, it means that no subsidy is available on tbe further £20,000. This is the reason for desiring to waive the subsidy on rates in favour of a subsidy on road works.
