QUEEN CARNIVAL.

MISS H. HOCKEN SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE. After a strenuous and exciting period of work the Feilding Hockey Association’s queen carnival was concluded on Saturday night at the Drill Hall,.when Miss Hazel Hocken, the Colyton candidate, was declared queen' amid enthusiasm. Miss Hoc-

ken’s committee came in just prior to the close of the poll with the substantial sum of £BO in cash, and this had the effect of raising her to the top by. close on 3000 votes The supporters of the town candidate, Miss Freda Iteid, were by no means idle and working hard right up to the end, carried the colours of their candidate well into second place, while Miss J. Pedersen, the Carnarvon-Oliakea candidate, came next. Miss Hocken received congratulations on all sides on her success and among the first to offer their pleasure at her win were Miss Reid and Miss Pedersen. The approximate sums raised by the carnival effort exceeded the most optimistic expectations of the association. At first about £2OO was aimed at, the money being for improvement purposes at Victoria Park, but as the carnival progressed it was seen that this sum would be exceeded. It was then considered that the £3OO mark would be reached, but when the bazaar concluded on Saturday night andthe results were made known it was announced that the carnival had produced a return above £450. The carnival will finally conclude with the crowning ceremony of Miss Hocken. VOTING RESULTS. The total number of votes obtained by the respective candidates were as under: —Miss Hocken, 16,384; Miss Reid, 13,770; Miss Pedersen, 8720. The final count of the proceeds made yesterday reveal the receipts to be £486. When it is remembered that the greater portion of this sum was obtained in small amounts, threepenny competitions for instance, yielding just on £BO, it is seen to what extent the cumulative effect of enthusiasm and energetic and hard-work-ing committees can be carried.
