DAFFODIL SHOW.

CHOICE NARCISSI DISPLAY. HERALDS OF SPRING. Heralding the arrival of spring, and making a bold show of fragrant petalled beauty, an excellent display of narcissi and other spring flowers was on display at the Empire Hall on Saturday when the Palmerston North Horticultural Society’s daffodil show was held. With good entries, there were strong competitive classes of choice narcissi, which were very attractively displayed. In addition to stately trumpets, the decorative classes furnished many of the other beautiful flowers o 1 the season of the year, the brilliant anemones and the showy magnolias being particularly prominent.

The chairman of the committee of the society (Air A. AY. Just) apologised for the unavoidable absence of the president (Mr A. E. Mansford). He stated that notwithstanding the bad weather in the winter and early spring the show was quite a creditable one. He would like to see more people join the society and bring tho results of tlreir work forward for competition. He thanked the stewards for their labours, saying they were a happy band of workers, and expressed appreciation of tho services rendered by Mr J. Galland as bon. secretary over a period of more than twelve years. The show was officially opened by Air J. A. Nash, M.P., patron of the society, who expressed gratification at tho excellent attendance of the public. He congratulated the society on possesing such an energetic secretary and committee, also the exhibitors for tlreir support, saying that the splendid work of the society merited every encouragement. The daffodil, said Air Nash, was tho emblem of spring, and called to mind the English countryside and woodlands where it nodded its golden head. Alost flowers were credited by the old herbalists with some healing virtue, but it was strange that no such healing powers were ascribed to the daffodil. There was compensation for this, however, in that it was one of the favourite flowers of the poets. The naricssus had always been a favourite garden flower. The poets’ narcissus came from South Europe, the narcissus jonquille came from Spain in 1596, and the hooppetticoat narcissus and the narcissusTriandus from Portugal.

The Russell Cup for 18 varieties of narcissi, open to all exhibitors, was won by Afrs M. Aloorby (AVanganui), with Air G. Larsen (Opiki) second and Alessrs J. AV. and A. J. Thomson (Lower Hutt) third. There were six entries.

The award for the best trumpet in the open section was secured by Air A. S. Brewster (Feilding) with Ins exhibit La Paloma, that for the best bloom other than trumpet going to Airs Aloorby’s exhibit, Golden Circle. Airs C. A. Leicester’s (Tangimoana) bloom Aloray was adjudged the best trumpet in the amateur section, a AA’bite Nile shown bv Airs Aloorby taking the certificate for best bloom other than trumpet in the amateur section. Mrs Aloorby’s Golden Circle was adjudged the best bloom in the show. Airs J. L. AVeightman’s Cup for twelve amateur blooms (trumpets, incomparabilis, Barrii and Leedsii) was won by Air C. Lennox (Opiki). The judges in the various sections were: —Narcissi, Air A. Gibsone, Alarton; cut flowers and vegetables, Air F. Mason, Feuding; domestic, Mrs D. Buchanan, Tiakitabuna ; decorative, Airs AV. AI. Clark, Levin. Air J. Galland again proved an efficient secretary. Stewards’ duties were carried out by Alessrs J. Adamson, G. H. Dawick, A. L.
