PIT DISASTER

15 MEN KILLED. MANY STILL ENTOMBED. (By Electric Telegraph—United Press Association.—Copyright.) Received September 13, 1.30 p.rn. LONDON, Sept. 12. At least 15 persons were killed and 51 are still entombed as the result of a pit explosion at Happlewell, Yorkshire. Sheets of flame swept the galleries.

Nine men crawled to safety on their hands and knees, with their clothes smouldering, through dust and smoke. They were the most seriously injured. Rescuers are battling to reach those entombed, while women are praying and weeping at the pithead. Doctors, ambulances and other help aro arriving from all parts of the South Yorkshire coalfields.
