LIBRARY SYSTEMS.
POSSIBLE IMPROVEMENTS,
WELLINGTON, Sept. 12
Improvements in the school and country library systems of New Zealand may be a possible development arising irom the overseas tours of Dr G H. Scholeiieid, Parliamentary Librarian, and Mr N. T. Lambourne, Director of .Education. The Education Department holds the view that the withdrawal of subsidies from school libraries has meant a marked deterioration in a service of great educational importance. The extension of country libraries appeals to be a slightly more difficult matter. It lias lieeli stated that no town with a population under 10.000 can provide an adequate library service, but in England and the United States considerable .success lias attended the establishment of central institutions tor purchasing, distributing and supervising libraiy facilities over wide rural areas. . . .. It is suggested that districts in New Zealand should he organised on this basis, with tlie possible emjdoyment of travelling library vans, the Education Department is particularly interested in. country libraries, as it bolds that adequate "facilities for reading are a necessary adjunct to ordinary education.
