DANNEVIRKE, Sept. 13. The September meeting of the Townswomen’s Guild was well attended, several visitors and new members being present. Air A. J. Smith, a local nurseryman, gave an interesting talk on horticulture. An exchange of seedlings was a feature of the afternoon, and more business than usual was done at the sales table. The knitting competition was well responded, to, the award going to Airs Simon AlcKenzie. The guessing competition was won by Airs J. Graham. An enjoyable juvenile concert programme, arranged by Alesdames J. F. Scott and Evernden, was contributed. A community sing and afternoon tea completed a happy gathering. At the committee meeting which followed the correspondence dealt with included appeals for co-operation from the Plunket Society, the Crippled Children’s Society, and the Health Camp Campaign Committee. Airs J. F^ Scott was appointed to represent the Townswomen’s Guild in connection with the work of the Crippled Children’s Society. The president and secretary will represent the guild ut a provincial conference or townswomen, to be held in Palmerston North on September 30. On Wednesday the Danneviike Harriers met at the. home of Air and Airs Cross to compete for the club championships. Airs Cross started the i ace and the course taken was one lap of the harrier rally course, about three and a-half miles. Mr E. W. Alarsh was timekeeper and the first to finish was E. Emeny, with A. Harper and J. Harper second and third respectively. Air and Airs H. Aluddock, of Wellington, are visiting relatives in Tiratu. Yesterday Air Hubbard, of Waipukurau, Government fields instructor. paid a short visit to tlie Tiratu block. Air R. G. Buchanan of Wellington, who has been visiting Mi S. 1. Hunter, Waitahora, returned to the capital to-day. Air A. Thompson, secretary of the local branch of the New Zealand Labour Party wlio lias been confined to his home for several weeks, is now about again. Air W. U. Hulston, manager of the Commercial Bank, who is on annual leave, is visiting Christchurch. Air G. A. J. MeNicol, of the relieving staff, is la charge of the office. Airs Hulston left to-day lor Wellington, on her way south' to join Air Hulston. Air J. \\ • Ellingham, of Wlietukura, had the misfortune recently to cut a leg with an axe, necessitating his removal to a private hospital for treatment. He is progressing satisfactorily, and expects to be aide to return to his home in a tew da vs. . \tr AY Tougher, who lias been condoctor of the Wanganui Garrison Band tor several months, has been offeree the baton of the Danneviike Municipal Band says a Wanganui paper.
