Mrs J. McEvody and Misses McEvedy, of Palmerston North, arc visiting Wellington. Mrs W. S. Bean, of Nelson, accompanied by her young son, has been spending a few days with her brother, Mr L. Thompson, of Glen Oroua. Master James Walker, of Frederick Street, is spending the term holidays in Picton, as the guest of his aunt, Miss AValker. “liawhiti Boa.” Bt. Hon. Sir Francis Bell was granted fourteen days’ leave of absence from the Legislative Council yesterday on account of bereavement. In referring to the death of Lady Bell a few days ago, the Leader of the Council (Hon. B. Masters) said he felt sure members would support him in taking an unusual course in order to express sympathy with their esteemed colleague, and to ask Mr Speaker, Hon. Sir Walter Carncross, to convey the Council’s deepest sympathy to Sir Francis.

REGISTERED NURSES. MANAWATU BBANCH MEETING. The monthly council meeting of the Manawatu branch of the New Zealand Registered Nurses’ Association was held in the Plunket rooms, when Miss C. McKenny (Paliiatuo) presided. One new member was elected, while the resignation of Miss A. .Griffen from the position of vice-president in view of her departure from Palmerston North was accepted with regret. It was resolved to invite nominations for the positions of officers to the branch, and to hold the anmeeting early in November. Miss McKenny presented a report on the executive meeting for tho Florence Nightingale Memorial, the speaker being accorded a vote of thanks.

METHODIST YOUNG WOMEN. BIBLE CLASS UNION. Special significance was attached to the annual thanksgiving service of tho Hawke’s Bay-Mauawatu Methodist Young Women’s Biblo Class Union at Dannevirke, at the week-end, because the Palmerston North executive, which has directed union activities for the past three years, was relinquishing office to a new body of workers in Napier. There were 44 present, representing classes from Napier to Feilding, for the full programme, whilo there was an attendance of over 70 at the Sunday service. Mrs G.H. Bycroft presided in the unavoidable absence of the president (Mrs A. N. Scotter). On Saturday evening the visitors were entertained at tea by tho Dannevirke members of the union. Among greetings received were those from the Dominion headquarters of the movement and from Mrs E. C. Taylor, a past president and now a vice-president. A comprehensive review of the work of tho past year was given in the report, which was read by Miss M. A. Verry. Tho executive, at the conclusion of the period, contained seven members who were appointed three years ago to the original executive. There were now 27 affiliated classes in the union: 11 senior, 10 intermediate and 6 junior. Five classes had withdrawn, 23 members had left to enter Sunday school teaching and five had become class leaders. The present affiliated membership was 307, with 52 auxiliaries. Two Easter camps had been held, 119 girls attending, including 43 first-time campers. Much class visitation and extension work had been accomplished. Social service of various forms had been entered upon and active support given to homo and foreign missions. Tho report concluded with thanks to all who had shared in making tho work so fruitful during the three years the executive had been located in Palmerston North.

The report was adopted. , Those present contributed a largo number of garments and other gifts for the orphanage at Masterton. The class representatives recorded their appreciation of the work done by retiring executive workers, particular mention being made of the generous services of Mrs Scotter and Miss Verry. Each received a beautiful posy. Posies were also presented to Mrs H. J. Odell, of Napier, the new president; Miss M. Wray, the new secretary, and to Miss C. Gifford (Feilding) a past secretary, who leaves shortly for India. At the servico of, dedication and thanksgiving on Saturday afternoon, an inspirational address was given by Mrs Odell.
