ESCAPE OF WHEY
COMPLAINT AT MANGAWHATA
The escape of whey into the Main Drain from the Mnngawhata Dairy Company’s factory was mentioned at the annual meeting of suppliers at the factory, yesterday, by Mr W. H. Gimblett, who is a member of the Sluggish River Drainage Board. Up to the present there had been no action decided upon by the Drainage Board as to the drainage from the factory, said Mr Gimblett. The board had appointed him to deal with the matter ju company with the directors of the company. The board would interfere no longer, and if any complaints were made now the subject would go to the Health Department. The matter could be put right if the suppliers took all reasonable care to see that there was no overflow into the drain when they were taking whey. There was too much whey aud milk going into the drain, and this could be prevented. Action had been taken last year, but too late, and this year the suppliers should watch the position from the beginning of the season.
For a long period of years there had been no complaints about the subject even though a large amount of whey had gone down the drain, said the chairman (Mr R. M. White). In those times the man who had contracted for the cleaning of the drain had wanted the whey to go into the drain because it killed the weeds. It was only since the unemployed had been cleaning the drain that complaints had been heard, and they had received an extra shilling a day for the work. Mr Gimblett said that several suppliers whose properties were situated along tlie drain had complained to him. Several of those present agreed that consideration should be given to the subject as there had been a smell from the drain, but others thought that the amount going into the drain was not sufficient to create a bad smell. In closing the discussion, the chairman said he desired all the suppliers to realise what the directors were faced with when the health officer came to the factory. The factory was in a very fortunate position now in regard to water supply aud drainage, and it should not be jeopardised in any way.
